Ford Transit: OBD diagnostics for a working van
A van that stops working costs money by the hour, which changes the diagnostic priority from curiosity to prediction. Three readings forecast most Transit downtime.
A van is a tool, and the economics are different from a car. An hour off the road is an hour unbilled, which makes predicting faults far more valuable than diagnosing them after the fact.

The three readings that forecast downtime
Check these monthly and most Transit surprises stop being surprises.
1. DPF soot load and distance since regeneration
The single most valuable reading on a Transit, because van usage is exactly the pattern that blocks filters: multiple short trips, a lot of idling, and rarely the sustained motorway run a regeneration needs.

Watch the oil level too. Repeated interrupted regenerations dilute the oil with diesel and the dipstick level rises. Above maximum means change it, not top it up. This matters more on vans than cars because the driving pattern makes it far more likely.
2. Battery and charging under full load
Vans carry more electrical load than their base specification suggests: interior lighting, beacons, inverters, tracking, refrigeration, tail lifts. Much of it is aftermarket and much of it is wired optimistically.
Check charging voltage with everything switched on. Below about 13 V at idle under full load means the system cannot keep up.

3. Fuel rail pressure under load
Power that fades when loaded or on a hill and returns when empty is a supply restriction, and on a working van the filter is usually overdue.

The recurring Transit faults
EGR carbon
Inevitable on a van doing urban delivery work. Commanded versus actual position is the diagnosis, and a valve that lags before it sticks is the point to act.
P0404 and EGR cooler leaks.
Injectors
High mileage and variable fuel quality take their toll. Correction values flag a failing injector before it becomes a misfire: EDC17 correction values and common rail injector diagnostics.
Turbo and boost
Underboost is usually a split hose or loose clamp rather than a failed turbocharger — check the cheap causes first: turbocharger boost leak diagnostics and P0299 and P0234.
AdBlue on later models
AdBlue warning countdown — and note the countdown is literal. At zero the van will not restart, which on a working vehicle means a lost day.
Limp mode

Load, and what it does
A van spends its life near its weight limit, and everything wears accordingly.
- Brakes work harder — grinding when braking.
- Suspension carries constant load — suspension bushes wear symptoms.
- Transmission fluid runs hotter, especially on automatics: transmission overheating warning.
- Tyres matter more, and pressures should be set for the actual load: loading the car safely and TPMS light will not reset.

Buying a used Transit
Ex-fleet vans have known histories and hard lives. The scan is worth more here than on almost any car.
- Soot load and regeneration distance. A filter at 80% is a negotiating point worth several hundred.
- Oil level. Above maximum means regeneration dilution.
- Pending codes — pending vs stored codes.

- Charging under full electrical load.
