Suspension bushes: the rubber that decides geometry and tyre wear
A bush wears quietly and tyres pay for it. The signs, how to check, and why an alignment is mandatory after replacement.
A bush is a rubber-and-metal joint that locates an arm and lets it work without friction. It wears quietly and gradually, and the most expensive consequence of that wear is not a knock but a set of tyres.
What it does
It holds the geometry — the arm should move only in its designed plane.
It damps vibration — the rubber keeps small oscillations out of the body.
It absorbs misalignment as the suspension works.
When the rubber ages and cracks, the arm gains excess play, and the wheel angles change under load.
Signs of wear
Knocking over bumps — dull rather than metallic.
Squeaking when the car is rocked — dry rubber; covered in the suspension squeak article.
Uneven tyre wear — the main and most expensive consequence; the patterns are covered in the tyre wear article.
The car wanders on the motorway — constant small corrections are needed.
Pulling under braking — the arm shifts under load; covered in the pulling article.
The alignment “will not hold” — it was set and drifted again within a few thousand miles. The classic sign: aligning a car on worn bushes is pointless.
How to check
Visually: cracks in the rubber, delamination, the metal sleeve displaced from centre, extruded rubber.
With a bar: with the car raised, lever the arm gently — visible play in the joint means wear. Done carefully and with an understanding of where to apply force.
By rocking: knocking and squeaking when pushing down on a corner.
By consequence: uneven tyre wear at correct pressures is a strong suspicion.
Why an alignment follows replacement
A mandatory part of the job, not an extra.
The reason is simple: the bush locates the arm. A new joint positions it differently from a worn one — the geometry changes.
The cost of skipping it: new tyres consumed within a few thousand miles, so saving on the alignment costs a set of rubber.

About polyurethane
Upside: longer lasting than rubber, less play, sharper handling.
Downside: stiffer — more vibration in the cabin and more load on the body mountings.
In practice: for an everyday car, rubber to factory specification is usually the right answer; polyurethane makes sense where precision matters more than comfort.

Steering angle sensor codes — after the geometry shifts.
Stability control codes — the system sees a mismatch between steering angle and actual motion.
Wheel speeds — with heavy play the ABS sensor signal becomes unstable.
