DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter): diagnosing regeneration, clogging and when it's time for a clean
What a DPF is, how it regenerates, which DTCs signal a problem (P2002, P244A, P244B), how to read soot levels via OBD-II, and why short trips kill diesel engines.
DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is a mandatory element of diesel cars from Euro 5 (2011) that traps soot particles. It’s also the most frequent cause of an expensive diagnosis for a diesel driven mostly in the city. This post: how OBD-II sees DPF state, which codes warn of clogging, and what to do.
How DPF works and why it “dies”
Soot accumulates in a ceramic honeycomb. When the load reaches 40-60%, the ECU triggers regeneration — extra fuel is injected into the exhaust, the temperature rises to 600-650°C, soot burns into CO₂ + ash. A successful regen takes 15-20 minutes of continuous driving at 40+ mph.
What kills a DPF:
- Short trips (engine doesn’t reach 90°C — regen never starts)
- EGR faults (excess air → excess soot)
- Injector or fuel-pressure problems (unburned fuel)
- Wrong-spec oil (creates non-flammable ash)

Typical DPF DTCs
- P2002 — “Filter efficiency below threshold” (classic clog)
- P244A / P244B — DPF pressure out of range
- P2453 / P2454 / P2455 — DPF pressure sensor issues
- P2463 — soot load exceeds limit (needs forced regen)
- P24AF — regen interrupted (common city-diesel symptom)
What to do with a clogged DPF
- Active regen on the highway — 30-40 min at 60+ mph in 3rd-4th gear, 2500-3000 RPM. Works on 40-50% clogging.
- Forced regen via diagnostic tool — ECU command to raise temp to 700°C stationary. Only for 50-70% clogging; on >80% may melt the filter.
- Chemical clean without removal — chemistry + blow-through, ~$100. Works on 70-85% clogging.
- Removal + clean — ~$300-500, for deep clog with ash.
- DPF replacement — OEM $2000-4000, aftermarket $500-1000. Avoid “delete” — illegal and ruins ECU mapping.
How to avoid it
- Every 2 weeks — 30 min continuous at 55+ mph (so regen completes)
- Don’t shut off during regen (app shows “Regeneration in progress”)

- Use only “Low SAPS” oil — with low sulphated ash content
