Turbo diagnostics: P0299 (underboost) and P0234 (overboost) — 8 causes

Turbo is one of the more expensive repairs (from $800 for a rebuild to $3000+ for new). But OBD-II can warn long before physical failure — P0299/P0234 codes and a few PIDs will tell you “you have a month, not 3 years”. Below: 8 causes of typical turbo codes and a step-by-step search algorithm.
Key OBD-II PIDs for the turbo
- MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) — pressure in the intake manifold. At idle 30-45 kPa, at full boost 180-250 kPa.
- Boost pressure (manufacturer PID) — measured boost vs target
- VGT position — variable geometry turbo actuator (0-100%)
- Turbocharger inlet/outlet temperature — up to 850°C on diesel
- Waste gate duty cycle — % of time the bypass valve is open

8 causes of P0299 (underboost)
- Clogged VGT geometry — soot locks the vanes in open position. Classic diesel at 60-90k mi.
- Cracked intake pipe — air leaks after the intercooler. Common after intercooler replacement or clean.
- Fouled intercooler (oil from PCV) — airflow drops. Wash every 30k mi.
- Dying VGT actuator (electric or vacuum) — can’t pull the vanes.
- Exhaust leak upstream of turbo — exhaust gases leak, turbo doesn’t have energy to spin.
- Clogged DPF — see DPF post. Back-pressure prevents turbo from spooling.
- EGR stuck open — steals part of the intake air.
- Worn turbo bearings — shaft play, rotor can’t hold RPM.
5 causes of P0234 (overboost)
- Stuck VGT geometry in closed position — over-closed vanes = high pressure.
- Waste gate solenoid stuck closed — bypass valve doesn’t open.
- Fouled MAP sensor — reads low pressure, ECU requests more boost, actual overshoots.
- Remap (chip tuning) — often P0234 appears on stock cars where someone bumped the map tables.
- Cracked vacuum control line (on older turbos) — waste gate doesn’t get the open command.
Search algorithm — 20 minutes
Step 1. Read VGT position vs boost
Blipping at 3000 RPM:
- VGT 20-40%, boost 180 kPa → normal
- VGT 80%+, boost 130 kPa → hypotheses 1, 4, 5, 6 (VGT can’t pull)
- VGT 10-20%, boost 250+ kPa → hypotheses 1 (jam), 3, 4
Step 2. Boost pressure vs target
Compare target and actual boost:
- Delta > 20% → actively hunt (step 3)
- Delta < 5% but P0299 in memory → historical, clear the code and monitor
Step 3. Visual inspection
- Listen for a “hissy whistle” louder than usual — cracked piping
- Look at oil in intake boots (indicates turbo shaft play)
- Look at intercooler condition (sludge → time to clean)
- Waste gate check — by hand with engine off
Step 4. Smoke machine test
Smoke-test the intake system — cracks show immediately. Shop cost: $30-50.

Prevention
- Don’t shut down a turbo engine right off the highway — 1-2 min idle to cool (prevents oil coking in bearings).
- Change oil on schedule — turbo needs “Extended Life” spec, not “economy”. Old oil = dead turbo in 40k mi.
- Once a month — “warm up” the turbo on the highway at 3000+ RPM for 15-20 min (burns off VGT geometry deposits).
