Glow plug light flashing on a diesel: not about glow plugs
A steady coil symbol means preheating. A flashing one is the diesel equivalent of a check engine light, and glow plugs are rarely what it is complaining about.
The coil-shaped symbol on a diesel dashboard means two completely different things depending on whether it is steady or flashing, and confusing them sends people to buy glow plugs they do not need.
Steady versus flashing
Steady, for a few seconds after ignition on. Normal. The glow plugs are preheating the combustion chambers. Wait for it to go out, then start. In cold weather it stays on longer; that is by design.
Flashing, while driving or after starting. This is a fault indication. On most European diesels the coil symbol doubles as the engine management warning lamp, so a flashing coil means “the engine control system has stored a fault” — and the fault is usually nothing to do with glow plugs.
Some manufacturers use a flashing coil specifically for glow plug circuit faults, so the model matters. But on VAG, PSA and several others, treat it as a general engine warning.
Read the code before buying anything
This is the entire point. A flashing coil light is an instruction to plug in, not an instruction to visit a parts shop.
The codes that most often sit behind it:
Turbo and boost — P0299 underboost or P0234 overboost. Very common, and usually accompanied by a clear loss of power.
EGR — P0404 position or P0401 and P0402 flow. Carbon on a diesel EGR valve is close to inevitable.
DPF — P2002 and P2463, often alongside the DPF lamp itself: DPF light on.
Fuel rail pressure — P0087 too low or P0088 too high. Usually with a hard power limit.
AdBlue and SCR on newer diesels — AdBlue system diagnostics and AdBlue warning countdown.
Injectors — common rail injector diagnostics and injector correction values on EDC17.
Actual glow plug faults — P0670 to P0674. Real, but far from the most likely.
The power loss that comes with it
A flashing coil light very often arrives with limp mode: the engine refuses to make more than a fraction of its power, usually with a hard ceiling around 2500–3000 rpm.
That is protection, not damage. The ECU has decided it cannot control something safely and has limited output accordingly. It gets you home; it is not a state to drive in for weeks.

When it really is the glow plugs
Glow plug faults have a recognisable signature, and it is seasonal:
- Hard starting only when cold, fine once warm.
- White smoke on cold start that clears as the engine warms.
- Rough running for the first minute on a cold morning.
- Worse as autumn turns to winter, invisible in summer.
If your flashing light appeared in July on a warm engine with a power loss, glow plugs are not the answer.
Note also that a failed glow plug relay or control module produces the same symptoms as failed plugs and costs less to fix — always check the circuit before replacing four or five plugs.
Removal is where the cost lives
Glow plugs seize into aluminium cylinder heads. A plug that has been in place for eight years and 100,000 miles can shear off during removal, and extracting a broken glow plug is a specialist job that occasionally means removing the head.
That is why quotes vary so widely: the parts are cheap and the risk is not. Ask the workshop what happens if one shears before agreeing to the job.
The winter connection
Everything about glow plugs is temperature-dependent, which means a marginal system is invisible in October and decisive in January. The pre-winter check is worth doing: pre-winter OBD checklist, car not starting in cold and winter starting tips.
Diesel fuel itself waxes at low temperatures, which produces starting problems that look identical and have nothing to do with the electrical system.
Cost expectations
- Diagnostic scan: free if you own an adapter.
- Glow plug relay or control module: $60–250.
- Glow plugs, straightforward: $80–250 for a set fitted.
- Glow plugs, one sheared: $300–1200.
- Whatever the actual code turns out to be: anything from a $20 hose to a $1200 turbo.
