Diesel Common Rail Injector Diagnostics via OBD-II — Without Removal
How to diagnose diesel Common Rail injectors through OBD-II: Live Data Balance Rate, Return Flow, P020X codes, IQA correction on Bosch, Delphi, Siemens systems — VW, BMW, Ford, Peugeot.
Diesel Common Rail injectors are one of the most expensive repairs (£500–£3,000 for a set). OBD-II allows you to identify a faulty injector or measure return flow without removal — saving time and money on unnecessary dismantling.
How Common Rail Injectors Interact with OBD-II
The CR (Common Rail) system controls injectors via solenoids or piezoelectric actuators. The ECU constantly measures and corrects:
- Injection Quantity Correction (Balance Rate) — the difference between target and actual delivery per cylinder
- Return Flow — fuel return through injector drain passages
- Injector Duration — injector opening time in microseconds
These parameters are available in Live Data and give a precise picture of each injector’s condition.
Key Live Data Injector Parameters
Injection Quantity Correction / Balance Rate
This is the most important parameter. The ECU automatically adjusts each cylinder’s fuel delivery to equalise engine running. With healthy injectors, all corrections are near zero.
Normal values (varies by manufacturer):
- Bosch CR (VW, BMW, Mercedes): ±1 mg/stroke
- Delphi (Ford, Opel): ±2%
- Siemens/Continental (PSA, Fiat): ±1.5 mg/stroke
Diagnostics:
- If a specific cylinder correction is -3 mg/stroke → injector delivers too much (leaking)
- If correction is +3 mg/stroke → injector delivers too little (clogged or worn)
- At ±5 mg/stroke → critical deviation → replacement or reconditioning
Injector Duration (PW, microseconds)
Injector opening time in microseconds under identical operating conditions:
- All cylinders: ~300–400 μs at 1,500 RPM idle → normal
- One cylinder: 480 μs while others are at 320 μs → ECU compensating for shortfall (injector under-delivering)
Return Flow
On some systems (especially Delphi and Siemens), fuel return flow measurement through drain ports is available:
- New injector: 5–15 ml/min return
- Worn: > 50 ml/min → internal nozzle or body wear
Injector Fault Codes

System-Specific Diagnostics
Bosch EDC16/EDC17 (VW, BMW, Mercedes)
Balance Rate — Einspritzmenge Korrekt. (in mg/stroke)
Measured at idle. Difference > 2 mg between cylinders → suspect cylinder identified.
BMW note: Large correction values are often the first sign of poor-quality diesel or early nozzle tip wear.
Delphi DCM3.5/DCM6.1 (Ford TDCi, Opel CDTi, Renault dCi)
IQA (Injector Quantity Adjustment) — factory code of each injector, written into the ECU when installed.
When replacing an injector → MUST write new IQA via OBD. Without this, the ECU can’t correctly compensate for the new injector’s delivery.
How to check: Live Data → IQA Cyl 1-4 → compare with the label on the injector body.
Siemens/Continental (Peugeot 308, Fiat Punto, Renault Megane)
C2I (Correction pour Injecteur Individuel) — equivalent of IQA.
Available via Mode 22 (UDS) or PSA-specific protocol.
Injector Activation Test via OBD
Most modern OBD-II scan tools support individual injector cut-out test (Injector Cut-Out Test):
- Engine at idle
- Sequentially deactivate each injector via OBD → engine responds with instability
- Normal response: RPM drops 50–100 RPM when each cylinder is cut
- Faulty injector: RPM doesn’t change when cut (this cylinder was already “not firing” or was seizing)
Car Diagnostics supports the Injector Test for most CR systems (Bosch, Delphi, Siemens).
Failure Signs by Deviation Type

Summary
OBD-II + Live Data enables:
- Identifying the faulty injector (cylinder balance) without removal
- Verifying correct IQA/C2I programming after replacement
- Confirming repair — after cleaning or reconditioning, Balance Rate should return to normal
This saves £50–£200 in unnecessary labour from removing all injectors “blindly” for bench testing.
