Loading a car: staying within limits and avoiding a missile in the cabin
An overloaded car brakes longer and steers worse. Permitted weights, securing the load, and what changes in the way it drives.
Loading a car is treated as a question of whether it will fit. In fact it is a question of braking distance, handling, and what happens to the load in an emergency stop.
How much is allowed
The maximum permitted mass is in the documents and on the plate in the door aperture.
Working out the payload is simple: gross weight minus kerb weight. Then subtract the passengers — and what remains is what you can carry.
The reality: a family of four with holiday luggage is often at that limit, and sometimes past it.
What changes under load
Braking distances grow — the main point.
The body sits down at the rear, the headlights rise and dazzle oncoming traffic. On cars with manual levelling it must be adjusted for the load; on cars with automatic levelling the sensor must work.
Handling changes: the front axle unloads, and the car turns and brakes worse.
Tyre pressures must be raised to the laden values — they are on the same plate. That is a condition, not a recommendation.

The missile rule
The most important practical point here.
An unsecured object in an emergency stop keeps travelling at the speed the car was doing. Its effective weight rises many times over.
So: a toolbag on the parcel shelf is a dangerous object, not an inconvenience.
The rules:
- Heavy items low and forward, against the seat backs.
- Never above the seat back line without a net or a bulkhead.
- Strap loads to the factory lashing eyes in the boot floor.
- The parcel shelf is only for things that weigh nothing.
- A net or bulkhead is essential when carrying large items with the seats folded.
The roof
A roof rack raises the centre of gravity — the car behaves differently in corners and in crosswinds.
The roof load limit is far lower than people assume; it is in the handbook.

Check the mountings after the first few miles and at every stop.
Trailers
The permitted trailer weight is in the documents, separately for braked and unbraked.
Weight distribution inside the trailer is critical: too little noseweight causes snaking at speed.

What diagnostics shows
Ride height sensors on cars with adaptive suspension and automatic levelling — codes when they run out of range.
Stability control codes — a laden car responds differently, and with a raised centre of gravity the system intervenes more often.
Tyre pressure monitoring codes — when pressures were not adjusted for the load.
Transmission temperature — it rises when towing and fully laden.
