Headlights dim at idle: charging system or ground fault
Lights that brighten when you rev are telling you the alternator cannot meet demand at low speed. Whether that is the alternator, the belt or a bad ground is decided by one measurement.
Headlights that dim at a standstill and brighten as you pull away are describing something specific: electrical supply is falling short at low engine speed. That is a narrow diagnosis, and one measurement resolves most of it.
A small amount is normal
Some variation is expected. At idle the alternator turns slowest and produces least, and modern cars have large loads — heated screens, blowers, heated seats, cooling fans — that can briefly exceed what idle output covers.
A slight dip when the cooling fan starts, or when you switch on the rear demister at idle, is normal. What is not normal is a visible, sustained dimming with a modest load, or lights that pulse in time with the engine.
The measurement that decides it
Watch supply voltage in three conditions:

Load the system deliberately for the third row: headlights on main beam, rear demister, blower on maximum, heated seats.
Voltage that recovers at 2000 rpm but sags at idle points at alternator output capacity, a slipping belt, or a poor connection. Voltage that is low everywhere points at the alternator or its regulator outright.

The five causes
1. Belt slipping
The cheapest, and easily missed. A glazed or loose serpentine belt slips under electrical load, so alternator speed falls exactly when output is needed.
Signs: a squeal on start or when a heavy load switches on, and a belt with a shiny, glazed surface. See serpentine belt wear signs.
2. Poor grounds
This is the one people skip, and it is genuinely common on cars past ten years old.
Every electrical circuit returns through the chassis. Ground straps corrode where they bolt to the body, particularly the engine-to-chassis strap and the battery-to-body strap. A corroded ground adds resistance, which drops voltage, which dims everything.
Voltage drop test: with the headlights on, measure between the battery negative terminal and the alternator case, then between the battery negative and the engine block. Anything above about 0.2 V indicates a bad ground.

3. Alternator wear
Worn brushes reduce output at low speed first, which is exactly the symptom. Failing diodes reduce output and introduce AC ripple.
Ripple deserves a mention: healthy charging shows under about 0.5 V AC. Higher means diode failure, and ripple upsets electronic modules in ways that produce confusing, unrelated-looking faults — the reasoning behind P0606.
4. Battery at end of life
A tired battery has high internal resistance and cannot buffer the momentary shortfalls that idle produces. Voltage sags where a healthy battery would smooth it over.
A battery over four or five years old with this symptom is a strong suspect. Load-test it rather than reading voltage — battery replacement and registration.
5. Added electrical load
Aftermarket amplifiers, light bars, inverters and winches draw far more than the factory system was designed for. So do badly chosen LED conversions with poor drivers.

Flickering rather than dimming
Different symptom, different cause. Flicker that is rapid and irregular points at a loose connection somewhere rather than an output shortfall — a battery terminal that is tight but corroded underneath, or a chafed feed.

When it comes with other symptoms
Plus a battery warning lamp — charging has stopped, not merely weakened. Act now: battery light on while driving.
Plus heavy steering — on cars with electric power steering, low voltage reduces assistance. See power steering warning light.

What headlight bulbs themselves contribute
If only the headlights are dim and nothing else in the car is affected, look at the lights rather than the supply: aged bulbs lose output substantially over their life, and clouded lenses or moisture inside the unit cut it further. See headlight bulbs and condensation.
The distinction is simple — a supply problem dims the dashboard and interior lights too.
Cost expectations
- Cleaning ground connections: often free.
- Battery terminals: $5–40.
- Serpentine belt: $30–120 fitted.
- Battery: $80–250.
- Alternator, rebuilt or new: $150–600.
After the repair
Confirm 13.8–14.6 V at idle with the full electrical load applied, and check AC ripple is low. Then verify resting voltage the following morning sits at 12.6 V or above.
