How to detect boost leaks and turbocharger faults through OBD-II: P0299 underboost, P0234 overboost, Boost Pressure Live Data — systematic leak-finding algorithm without expensive equipment.
Turbo system faults are one of the most common causes of power loss and P0299 — on both petrol and diesel engines. OBD-II Live Data allows you to localise the problem — hose leak, faulty control valve, or worn turbo — without disassembly or expensive equipment.
How Boost Pressure Diagnostics Works via OBD-II
The ECU manages boost pressure through:
- Wastegate (pressure relief valve) — on most turbocharged engines
- VGT/VNT (variable geometry turbine) — on diesels and some petrols
OBD-II compares boost target (Boost Target) with actual boost (Boost Actual):
- Difference < 10 kPa = normal
- Difference 10–30 kPa = boost leak suspected
- Difference > 30 kPa = clear fault → P0299
P0299 — Turbo Underboost (Boost Below Threshold)
Root Cause Algorithm via Live Data
Step 1: Check Under Load
- Warm the engine to operating temperature
- Accelerate from 1,500 to 3,000 RPM with 70–80% throttle
- Watch:

Step 2: Analyse Wastegate/VGT
On diesels with VGT:
VGT Position Actual vs Requested: should match ±5%- If VGT doesn’t move (always 0% or 100%) → VGT stuck
On petrols with Wastegate:
Wastegate Duty Cycle %: at 2,500 RPM under load → 70–90%Wastegate Duty Cycle= 0% under load → control valve failed
Step 3: Locating the Hose Leak
When Boost Target >> Boost Actual with normal VGT/Wastegate — look for a leak:
- Turbo to intercooler (charge pipe)
- Intercooler to throttle body
- Intercooler itself (crack or loose fitting)
OBD leak detection method:
MAF Actual: under load should matchMAF Calculated from Speed-Density- Difference > 15% → air escaping after the MAF sensor (post-MAF leak)
P0234 — Turbo Overboost (Boost Above Threshold)
Opposite of P0299 — boost too high:
Causes:
- Stuck closed Wastegate (can’t open to release pressure)
- VGT stuck in closed position (maximum boost constantly)
- Faulty MAP sensor (ECU “sees” less pressure than actually present → keeps boosting)
Live Data:
Boost Pressure Actual>Boost Pressure Target: Wastegate closed or VGT stuckMAP Sensor Plausibility: if MAP reads lower than logically expected → sensor fault
P0234 is dangerous: overboost → detonation (petrol) or mechanical overload (diesel). With P0234 — investigate immediately.

Active Tests via OBD (Where Supported)
Some diagnostic tools support active turbo system tests:
VGT/VNT Sweep Test:
- ECU commands vanes to sweep 0% to 100%
VGT Position Actualshould follow → if uneven = carbon or mechanical seizure
Wastegate Activation Test:
- Command Wastegate to open
- Boost pressure should drop 0.2–0.5 bar → Wastegate opened successfully
