Ford Ranger: diesel pickup diagnostics for a working vehicle
Bought to tow and carry, and often used for neither. That mismatch produces most of what goes wrong, and it is visible in two readings.
The Ranger is a working vehicle: a ladder chassis, a diesel engine, four-wheel drive and a load bed. Its fault list follows from how it is actually used rather than from how it was designed.

The use-pattern mismatch
A pickup designed for long working days that instead does school runs and short local trips will block its filter, coke its EGR valve and dilute its oil.
That is the single biggest determinant of whether a Ranger is reliable, and it is not a design fault.

DPF
Track soot load and distance between regenerations rather than waiting for the lamp.

Oil dilution
Repeated interrupted regenerations put diesel in the sump and the dipstick level rises.
Above maximum means change it, not top it up. On a vehicle expected to work for years, this matters considerably.
EGR carbon
Commanded versus actual position is the diagnosis: P0400 and P0403 EGR flow and P0405 and P0406 EGR sensor.
AdBlue on later models
The countdown is legislated and ends in no restart — which on a working vehicle costs a day: AdBlue warning countdown and P204F reductant system performance.
Injectors and fuel supply
Power that fades under load and returns unladen is usually a supply restriction rather than the pump.

The drivetrain oils nobody changes
The highest-value maintenance item on a four-wheel-drive pickup, and no code warns you.
A transfer case and two differentials, all containing oil, and almost none of it changed on schedule.
The early warning is a whine that differs between acceleration and overrun. That is gear mesh, and an oil change at that stage sometimes prevents a rebuild.

If the vehicle has been through water crossings, add contamination to the list — hot axles hitting cold water draw water in through the breathers: driving through flood water.
Towing and load
What these are bought for, and what stresses them.
- Transmission fluid temperature on automatics is the reading that matters on a long pull: P0710 to P0713 transmission fluid temperature sensor and towing an automatic.
- Coolant temperature on long climbs: engine overheating diagnosis.
- Brakes work considerably harder laden: driving in mountains.
- Tyre pressures set for actual load: loading the car safely.
Corrosion
On a working vehicle that sees mud, salt and water, the underbody matters more than the electronics. Chassis, brake lines, suspension mounts and exhaust hangers.

Buying used
Often ex-working vehicles with hard lives.
- Soot load and regeneration distance. A filter at 80% is a negotiating point.
- Oil level — above maximum means dilution.
- Differential and transfer case oil history. Most sellers cannot answer.
- Underbody condition, which matters more than any code.
- Evidence of water crossings — check the axle oils for milky contamination.
- Injector correction values if you can read them.
- Readiness and permanent codes: Mode 0A permanent DTCs.
