Isuzu D-Max and SsangYong/KGM: diesel OBD diagnostics
Working diesels bought for towing and load carrying. The emissions hardware is the recurring cost, and the drivetrain oils are the recurring omission.
Both brands sell primarily diesel pickups and SUVs bought to work: towing, load carrying, and often off-road use. That purpose shapes the whole diagnostic picture.
SsangYong is now KGM, and the vehicles are the same underneath.

Generic OBD-II works normally
Both read conventionally with any competent Bluetooth Classic adapter — codes, live data, freeze frame, readiness. Beyond the powertrain needs manufacturer-level access, as everywhere: scan tool limits.
On less-familiar brands the most productive first step is reading the supported PID list, which tells you exactly what this vehicle reports: supported PIDs and why parameters are missing.
Diagnostics runs over Bluetooth Classic (SPP). BLE-only adapters pair with a phone and then fail to talk to the car.
The emissions stack, and the use-pattern mismatch
The recurring cost on both brands, and the cause is usually a mismatch between what the vehicle was designed for and how it is used.
A pickup designed for long working days that instead does school runs and short local trips will block its filter, coke its EGR valve and dilute its oil.
DPF
Watch soot load and distance between regenerations rather than waiting for the lamp.

Oil dilution
Repeated interrupted regenerations put diesel in the sump and the dipstick level rises. Above maximum means change it, not top it up. On a working vehicle expected to last, this matters considerably.
EGR carbon
Commanded versus actual position is the diagnosis, and a valve that lags before it sticks is the moment to act: P0404 and EGR cooler leaks.
AdBlue on later models
The countdown is literal — at zero it will not restart, which on a working vehicle costs a day: AdBlue warning countdown.
Injectors and fuel supply
Power that fades under load and returns unladen is usually a supply restriction rather than the pump: P0087, fuel filter replacement symptoms and car loses power uphill.

Glow plugs and the flashing lamp
A flashing coil lamp is a general engine warning on these, not necessarily a glow plug fault. Read the code before buying anything: glow plug light flashing and P0670 to P0674.
The drivetrain oils nobody changes
The highest-value maintenance item on either vehicle, and no code will warn you.
Four-wheel-drive versions have a transfer case and front and rear differentials. All contain oil, and almost none of it is changed on schedule.
The early warning is a whine that differs between acceleration and overrun. That is gear mesh, and an oil change at that stage sometimes prevents a rebuild.

If the vehicle has been through water crossings, add contamination to the list — hot axles hitting cold water draw water in through the breathers: driving through flood water.
Towing and load
What these are bought for, and what stresses them.
- Transmission fluid temperature on automatic versions is the reading that matters most on a long pull: transmission overheating warning and towing an automatic.
- Coolant temperature on long climbs, when the vehicle has the least margin it will ever have: temperature gauge fluctuating.
- Brakes work considerably harder laden: grinding when braking and driving in mountains.
- Tyre pressures set for actual load: loading the car safely.
Corrosion
On working vehicles that see mud, salt and water, the underbody matters more than the electronics. Chassis, brake lines, suspension mounts and exhaust hangers.

Buying used
These are often ex-working vehicles with hard lives.
- Soot load and regeneration distance. A filter at 80% is a negotiating point.
- Oil level — above maximum means regeneration dilution.
- Differential and transfer case oil history. Ask directly; most owners cannot answer.
- Underbody condition, which matters more than any code.
- Evidence of water crossings — check for milky contamination in the axle oils.
- Readiness monitors — all “not ready” means recent clearing: OBD readiness monitors explained.
