Nothing but short trips: why that is the hardest regime for an engine

What to do about it

The regime cannot always be changed, but it can be compensated.

Shorten the oil change interval. The “severe conditions” schedule exists precisely for this, and it is half the length. The cheapest and most effective measure; viscosity and approvals have their own article.

Take one longer drive a week — 20 to 30 minutes, ideally on a main road. That warms the engine, drives off condensate, recharges the battery, and lets a diesel complete a regeneration.

Do not idle to warm up for long. It does not help: an engine warms faster under load, and idling only adds carbon.

Watch the battery — load-test it once a season.

Combine journeys — one longer trip instead of three short ones is a completely different regime at the same mileage.
