AdBlue (DEF — Diesel Exhaust Fluid) and the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system are mandatory on Euro 6 diesels since 2014. SCR failure is one of the most common reasons for modern diesel diagnostics. OBD-II covers these faults well.
What AdBlue/SCR Does and How It Works
SCR system converts NOx (nitrogen oxides) into harmless nitrogen (N₂) and water:
- AdBlue (32.5% aqueous urea solution) is injected into the exhaust
- Heat decomposes urea to ammonia (NH₃)
- On the SCR catalyst NH₃ reacts with NOx → N₂ + H₂O
System components:
- AdBlue tank (5–25 litres depending on vehicle)
- Pump and heating element (AdBlue freezes at -11°C)
- Dosing injector
- NOx sensor before and after SCR catalyst
- SCR catalyst (usually in rear exhaust)

Most common SCR code on VW, Mercedes, BMW, Ford:

- Contaminated AdBlue: plain water or poor quality fluid → catalyst poisoned
- Wrong concentration: DEF diluted → less NH₃ → NOx not reduced
- Aged SCR catalyst: after 150,000–200,000 km efficiency drops
- Faulty dosing injector: urea crystallisation → blockage

P229F — DEF Quality Below Threshold
What it means: DEF quality sensor detected urea concentration outside specification (must be 32.5±1.5%).
Causes:
- Incorrect concentration fluid filled
- Contaminated tank (old DEF residue)
- Faulty DEF quality sensor

1. P229F (DEF quality)?
→ Drain AdBlue, refill with fresh fluid from reliable source
→ Clear code → if returned → DEF quality sensor fault
2. P20EE (SCR efficiency)?
→ Check DEF Quality → if OK
→ Check DEF Injection Rate in Live Data
→ 0 → injector/pump; > 0 → SCR catalyst worn
3. P2047 (injector)?
→ Check visually for crystallisation
→ Try purge (Reductant Injector Purge service function)
→ If no improvement → injector replacement
4. DEF Level < 5%?
→ Fill > 5 litres AdBlue → restriction removed automatically
Prevention Measures
- Use only automotive AdBlue (ISO 22241 standard): not technical urea, not water
- Don’t leave tank empty long: crystallisation in tank and injectors
- In winter: AdBlue freezes at -11°C. Vehicle has built-in heating, but long parking in frost → P229F on start (normal, clears after warm-up)
- Check level every 15,000 km: AdBlue indicator in instrument cluster
