Towing a car with an automatic: why "just a hundred metres" sometimes costs a gearbox
On a manual, towing is a question of having a rope. On an automatic it is a question of the lubrication pump, which only runs with the engine running. The limits and the safe options.
On a manual gearbox, towing is a question of a rope and common sense. On an automatic it is a question of design, and the cost of getting it wrong is measured in gearboxes.
Why automatics dislike being towed
The mechanism is simple, and once you understand it the rest of the rules need no memorising.
An automatic transmission is lubricated under pressure. That pressure comes from a pump driven by the engine. Engine runs, pump pumps, components are lubricated.
When a car is towed with the engine off, the picture inverts: the output shaft turns from the wheels while the pump stands still. Clutch packs, bearings, and planetary sets rotate dry.
That is the entire damage mechanism. Everything else is a question of speed and distance.
The “30 and 30” rule
The classic recommendation found in most manufacturers’ manuals: no faster than 30 mph and no further than 30 miles.
The figures are indicative and vary by model — the manual always takes precedence. But the logic behind them is identical: limit internal speeds and the time spent without lubrication.
The selector must be in neutral (N) while towing. Not park: there the output shaft is mechanically locked, and moving with the parking pawl engaged ends by breaking it.
When towing is not an option at all
A list where the exception costs more than a recovery truck.
Four-wheel drive. The problem is not only the transmission but the transfer case and coupling. Front wheels turn and rear ones do not, or vice versa, creating a circulation the driveline is not designed for. Most four-wheel-drive cars are transported on a flatbed only.
CVT. A design with a belt or chain clamped hydraulically. No pressure means no clamping, the belt slips across the pulleys and leaves grooves. That is irreversible.
Dual-clutch transmissions. The limits are usually stricter still than for a conventional automatic.
Electric and hybrid cars. A separate reason here: wheels connected to an electric motor generate current when they rotate. Towing with the driven wheels down can damage the power electronics. Practically all electric cars are flatbed only.
A transmission already in limp mode. If the car is stuck in one gear with a lamp lit, its condition is unknown. Limp mode is covered in its own article.
The safe options
In increasing order of reliability:
- A flatbed recovery truck. Always suitable, for every drivetrain.
- Partial lift — driven wheels on a dolly. Acceptable for front- or rear-wheel drive if the driven wheels are off the road.
- A rope within the limits — conventional automatics only, only if the manual permits, only in neutral, only to the nearest workshop.
If you are not sure which transmission you have, that alone is reason to choose option one.
What to check before attaching a rope
Five minutes with an adapter reduces the risk.
Transmission codes. P0700 is a pointer meaning “look inside the transmission module”, with specifics following: P0715, P0720, P0740–P0743.
Fluid temperature, if the parameter is available. Overheated fluid plus towing is a poor combination.
Why the car stopped in the first place. If the cause is the engine rather than the transmission — P0335, the crankshaft sensor, for instance — the gearbox is intact and the limits are softer. Covered in its own article.
Voltage. A weak battery produces a code cascade that looks worse than reality — mechanics in ghost and false codes.
If you are the one being towed
A few practical details people forget:
- Power steering and brake assist do not work with the engine off. Pedal and steering effort multiply.
- The ignition must be on, or the steering lock engages.
- Hazard lights are mandatory, and they draw from a battery that is not being charged.
- Distance and smoothness — a snatched rope is harder on an automatic than on a manual.
In short
- An automatic is lubricated by an engine-driven pump; engine off means running dry.
- The guideline is no faster than 30 mph, no further than 30 miles, selector in neutral.
- Four-wheel drive, CVT, dual-clutch, and electric cars are flatbed only.
- Read the codes first: sometimes the gearbox is fine and the engine stopped it.
- With the engine off, steering and brakes get several times heavier.
