There are two things that block a diesel particulate filter, and the difference between them decides whether the problem is solvable.

Why forced regeneration will not fix it

This is the practical consequence, and it is worth being clear about.

A forced regeneration burns soot. If the restriction is ash, the procedure runs, the temperatures are reached, and the restriction remains — because ash does not burn at any temperature the exhaust can produce.

Repeatedly forcing regeneration on an ash-loaded filter wastes fuel, dilutes the engine oil, and can damage the filter substrate through thermal stress.

Where the ash comes from

Mostly engine oil.

Diesel engine oils are formulated with metallic additives, and a small quantity of oil passes the rings into combustion on every engine. Those metals leave as ash and are trapped by the filter.

Two things influence the rate:

Oil specification. Low-SAPS oils — reduced sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur — exist precisely to slow this. Using a non-compliant oil accelerates ash loading substantially: engine oil viscosity and approvals.

Oil consumption. An engine consuming oil through worn rings, valve stem seals or a failing turbocharger seal loads the filter with ash far faster than a healthy one: engine oil consumption, normal or not.

If a DPF fills with ash unusually early, find out why the engine is consuming oil. Fitting a new filter without addressing it means repeating the expense.

Options when it is genuinely ash

Filter cleaning

Specialist services remove the filter and clean it — by pulsed air, ultrasonic bath, or aqueous methods. It is genuinely effective on many filters and considerably cheaper than replacement.

Not every filter is a candidate. Cracked or melted substrates cannot be recovered.

Replacement

An original filter is expensive. Aftermarket alternatives vary widely in quality, and a poor one can set efficiency codes shortly after fitting.

What not to do

Removing the filter is illegal in every market that requires one, fails inspection, and is detectable through the pressure sensor readings and ECU calibration.

The ash counter usually needs resetting, or the ECU will continue to believe the filter is loaded.

Read the ash value on any used diesel before buying. A filter at 80% ash on a car with a modest odometer reading tells you about both the previous use and the engine’s oil consumption.
