P2459: DPF regeneration frequency — the code that says you drive wrong
Not a component failure. The ECU has noticed the filter is regenerating far more often than it should, and that is usually about journeys rather than parts.
Most diagnostic codes name a component. This one names a pattern: the particulate filter is regenerating too frequently, and the ECU has flagged it because frequent regeneration is both a symptom and a cause of damage.

What normal looks like
Roughly, and depending on engine and use:

The value is readable in live data on most vehicles, and it is worth checking periodically rather than waiting for a warning.
Why frequent regeneration is damaging
Each regeneration:
- Injects extra fuel late in the cycle to raise exhaust temperature. Some of that fuel washes into the sump, and oil level rises.
- Heats the filter to around 600 °C, which stresses the substrate.
- Leaves a little more ash, permanently: P242F DPF ash accumulation.
- Uses fuel — measurably, on a vehicle regenerating every 100 km.
The oil dilution is the one that damages the engine. Diluted oil does not protect bearings, and an engine that has been regenerating constantly for months may have oil well above the maximum mark.
Check the dipstick. Above maximum means change it, not top it up.
The two categories of cause
1. Driving pattern — the common one
A regeneration takes fifteen to twenty minutes of sustained higher-speed driving. If journeys are shorter than that, regeneration starts and is interrupted, soot is not fully burnt, and the next attempt comes sooner.
Short urban journeys also produce more soot per kilometre, because the engine spends more time cold.
A diesel used exclusively for short trips is the wrong vehicle for that use. That is not a fault, and no repair changes it.

2. Something upstream producing excess soot
If the driving pattern is genuinely varied and the filter still regenerates constantly, look for a cause:
- EGR stuck open, recirculating too much exhaust and producing soot: P0400 and P0403 EGR flow.
- Failing injectors, with poor spray pattern: common rail injector diagnostics.
- Boost leaks, so the engine runs richer than intended: turbocharger boost leak diagnostics.
- A blocked air filter, restricting airflow.
- A turbocharger seal leaking oil into the exhaust, which loads the filter with material that does not burn cleanly.
- A filter at the end of its ash life, which cannot hold much soot before restricting.
The sensor possibility
Before accepting the pattern as real, confirm the measurement.
A differential pressure sensor reading high makes the ECU believe the filter is loaded when it is not, triggering regeneration unnecessarily. That produces P2459 with a healthy filter and healthy engine.

What to log

Track these monthly rather than once. The rate of soot accumulation is more informative than any single reading.
Completing a regeneration properly
If soot load is high and you want to help the filter clear:
- A sustained drive at motorway speed for twenty minutes, in a gear that keeps revs up.
- Do not switch off mid-regeneration. An interrupted regeneration leaves soot behind and puts fuel in the oil.
- Watch exhaust temperature if you can. A regeneration in progress is visible in the data.

The honest summary
If your journeys are mostly short and urban, P2459 is telling you something true about the match between the vehicle and its use. The repair, in that case, is either a change in how the car is driven — a regular longer run — or a different vehicle next time.
