P204F: reductant system performance and the AdBlue you cannot ignore
The dosing system is not delivering what it should. Crystallised urea is the usual reason, and short journeys are the usual reason for that.
“Reductant” is the formal name for AdBlue — the urea solution injected into the exhaust to reduce nitrogen oxides. P204F says the system delivering it is not performing as it should.

The crystallisation problem
The defining failure of this system, and it is worth understanding rather than just replacing parts.
AdBlue is roughly a third urea and two thirds deionised water. Injected into a hot exhaust, the water evaporates and the urea decomposes into ammonia, which does the conversion.
Below about 200 °C, that decomposition does not happen properly. Instead the urea dries into a hard white crystalline deposit.
Those crystals:
- Block the dosing injector.
- Build up in the exhaust pipe around the injection point.
- Coat the SCR catalyst face, reducing its effectiveness.
Short journeys are the cause. An exhaust that never reaches operating temperature guarantees crystallisation over time.
Short trips and engine damage.
The components that fail
The dosing injector
The most common. Crystallised urea blocks the fine spray holes, and the spray pattern degrades before it stops entirely.
Cleaning is often possible and much cheaper than replacement.
The pump module
Delivers pressurised fluid to the injector. Fails from crystallisation, from running dry, and from freeze damage.
The heater
AdBlue freezes at around −11 °C, so the tank and lines are heated. A failed heater means no dosing in winter, and P204F appearing every cold season and vanishing in spring.
A fault that is strictly seasonal points at the heater.
The level or quality sensor
Reports how much fluid is present and, on some vehicles, whether it is genuine AdBlue. A wrong reading produces system faults with a full tank.
The lines
Cracked or crystallised, or damaged by freezing.
AdBlue quality, and the container question
Worth being direct about, because it causes real failures.
- Use fluid meeting the correct specification. Not “urea solution”, not agricultural fertiliser solution.
- AdBlue has a shelf life. It degrades in heat and over time. Buy from somewhere with turnover.
- Never decant into a container that held anything else. Contamination — particularly with metals or hydrocarbons — poisons the SCR catalyst, and that is an expensive consequence of a convenient jerrycan.
- Do not dilute it. The concentration is specified and the system doses on that assumption.
The countdown is legislated
An SCR fault escalates deliberately:
- Warning message with distance remaining.
- Reduced power.
- Refusal to restart at zero.
This is required by emissions regulation so that a defeated system cannot simply be driven around. It is not a malfunction, and it means P204F comes with a deadline.
Note the remaining distance when the warning first appears. That is your timescale.
What to log

Prevention
Genuinely effective, and mostly about journey length:
- A sustained higher-speed drive regularly keeps the exhaust hot enough to avoid crystallisation.
- Keep the tank topped up rather than running it to the warning. Running dry stresses the pump.
- Buy quality fluid from a source with turnover.
- In winter, allow for the heater — very short journeys in freezing weather may never thaw the system.
Sequence
- Check the level. Genuinely, with the vehicle level.
- Note the countdown distance.
- Log dosing rate and exhaust temperature.
- Consider whether your journeys reach operating temperature.
- Inspect the injection point for white crystalline deposits.
- Check the heater if the fault is seasonal.
- Clean the injector before replacing it.
Pair an ELM327 adapter, open the free tier of the app and log exhaust temperature through a typical week of driving. If it rarely passes 200 °C, the crystallisation was inevitable and the repair will not hold without a change in use.
