Engine overheating: what to do in the first two minutes, and why the gauge lies
Overheating is one of the few cases where stopping correctly matters more than diagnosing correctly. The action sequence, six causes, and why the dashboard needle should not be trusted.
Overheating is the rare case where what you do in the first two minutes matters more than diagnostic precision. So we start there.
The first two minutes
- Air conditioning off, heater to maximum, fan to maximum. The heater core is a second radiator, and right now it is working for you. The cabin will be unbearable; the engine gets a few degrees of margin.
- Pull over and stop, without shutting down immediately if it has not boiled. At idle the pump keeps circulating and the fan keeps cooling. A shut-down engine with a hot head cools unevenly.
- If steam is coming from under the bonnet or the level is clearly at zero — shut down immediately.
- Do not open the expansion tank cap while hot. The system is pressurised and boiling coolant will hit your face. Wait at least 30 minutes.
- Do not pour cold water into a glowing engine. The thermal shock cracks cylinder heads.
Now, why it happened.
Why the dashboard gauge lies
An important point that explains why people miss overheating.
On many modern cars the temperature needle is deliberately damped: it sits dead centre across roughly 185–230 °F so as not to alarm the driver with normal fluctuation. It only starts moving once things are already bad.
So the real temperature lives in live data. The difference between 203 and 226 °F is invisible on the gauge, and to the engine those are different worlds.
Six causes by probability
1. Coolant level
The most common. A leak through a hose, radiator, pump, or seal. Sometimes coolant disappears slowly and invisibly over years.
Signature: the heater is warm at speed and cold at idle — the heater core sits high and runs dry first. Leaks are covered in their own article.
2. The cooling fan
Not running at all, or running late. Causes: relay, fuse, temperature switch, the motor itself, or on modern cars the fan control module.
The signature is distinctive: overheating in traffic, normal on the highway. Airflow copes without the fan while moving.
The fast check: warm to 212 °F in live data and listen for the fan.
3. Thermostat stuck closed
Coolant never reaches the main circuit. The signature mirrors the previous one: fine in town at low speed, overheating on the highway under load.
The opposite case — stuck open — produces not overheating but under-heating and code P0128.
4. A blocked radiator
Outside: seeds, insects, leaves packed between radiator and condenser. Inside: scale and the breakdown products of old coolant.
Signature: overheating that worsens gradually over years, worst in summer with the air conditioning on.
5. The water pump
A destroyed impeller or one slipping on its shaft. Coolant barely circulates.
Signs: overheating together with a cold heater — a very characteristic pairing. Plus sometimes a whine or a leak from the seal.
6. The head gasket
The most expensive cause, and simultaneously the consequence of any of the previous five. Combustion gases enter the cooling system.
The signs that complete the picture:
- The tank level rises with the engine running.
- Bubbles in the tank.
- Thick white vapour from the exhaust that does not clear once warm.
- Emulsion on the oil filler cap.
- Overheating arrives quickly and repeats even after topping up.
What to look at in diagnostics
- Live temperature — the only reliable source, not the needle.
- Rate of rise. Normal is a steady climb to 195 °F in 5–10 minutes.
- Fan switch-on point — should be around 212–220 °F.
