Lada Vesta and Granta: OBD-II support and common codes
Modern Ladas are fully OBD-II compliant and read with any standard adapter. The engines are simple, which makes the recurring fault list short and mostly cheap.
There is a persistent assumption that Ladas need special tools. For anything built in the last fifteen years that is simply not true — they are OBD-II compliant, use CAN, and read normally with any competent generic adapter.
What reads and what does not
Generic OBD-II works fully. Codes, live data, freeze frame, readiness monitors — all standard.
Engine management on modern Ladas is Bosch M17 or ME17 in most cases, which is a well-documented platform. That means the enhanced data situation is better than people expect, though as everywhere, anything beyond the powertrain — ABS, airbags, body — needs manufacturer-level access: scan tool limits.
Protocol background: OBD-II protocols explained.
The recurring codes
Lean mixture codes
The most common family. Intake hoses harden and crack, and crankcase breather hoses perish. The diagnosis is the fuel trim comparison: high positive at idle and near zero at 2500 rpm means unmetered air.
P0171 and P0174 and P2187 lean at idle.
Misfires
Coils and plugs, as everywhere. The swap test resolves which cylinder component is at fault in a single drive: P0301 to P0304.
Worth noting that fuel quality varies considerably in the markets where these cars are common, and a tank of poor fuel produces misfires and knock retard that clear once burnt through — bad fuel quality OBD symptoms.
Oxygen sensor and catalyst codes
P0130 to P0141 and P0420.
Before condemning a catalyst, check for an exhaust leak near the downstream sensor and check the upstream sensor’s switch rate. An ageing upstream sensor produces P0420 with a perfectly healthy catalyst — P0133 slow response.
Idle control
Carbon on the throttle plate gives hunting idle and stalling at junctions. Cleaning works; the relearn afterwards matters — P0507 and throttle body idle control.
Crankshaft and camshaft position sensors
Standard wear items that produce hot-stall-then-restart behaviour: P0335 and P0340.
EVAP
Perished vapour hoses on older examples. Check the fuel cap, then get a smoke test rather than replacing parts speculatively — P0442 small EVAP leak.
Timing belt: the one that matters
Most Lada engines are belt-driven, and several are interference designs — a snapped belt bends valves. The replacement interval is not optional, and on a used purchase with no documented belt change, budget for one immediately.

There is no code that warns you a belt is about to fail. This is one of the clearest cases where a scan tool does not substitute for a service schedule.
Electrical
Simpler architecture than most, which means fewer modules to go silent — but the universal rule still applies: a weak battery produces faults across several systems that look unrelated. Test it under load first.
Alternator charging diagnostics, battery terminals corrosion and when the scanner lies about ghost codes.
Ground connections deserve particular attention on any car that has seen salted roads: headlights dim at idle covers the voltage drop test that finds them.
Cold starting
These cars are common in cold climates, and the pre-winter checks are worth doing properly: cranking voltage, charging under full load, and a coolant temperature curve that actually reaches 90 °C.

Adapter compatibility
Any decent Bluetooth Classic adapter works. Diagnostics runs over Bluetooth Classic (SPP) — BLE-only adapters pair with a phone and then fail to talk to the car, because the ELM327 protocol requires a serial profile BLE does not provide.
Counterfeits are the more common problem: how to spot a fake ELM327 clone and how to choose an adapter.
Buying used
- Readiness monitors all “not ready” means recent code clearing — OBD readiness monitors explained.
- Pending codes — pending vs stored.
- Timing belt history, which no scan will tell you.
- Corrosion, which no scan will tell you either — underbody rust inspection.
Full routine: used car pre-purchase OBD check.
Try it on the free tier of the app — pair an ELM327 adapter and start with fuel trims and coolant temperature. On these engines those two readings catch most of what recurs.
