Pre-winter OBD checklist: the five readings that predict trouble

3. Coolant temperature behaviour

Log a full warm-up. Temperature should climb steadily to 85–95 °C and hold.

A thermostat stuck open leaves it at 70–75 °C, which in summer is a minor efficiency loss and in winter means:

  • The cabin heater never gets properly warm.
  • Windows fog and do not clear.
  • Fuel consumption rises 10–15%, because the ECU keeps enriching for a cold engine.
  • Condensate in the oil never boils off.
