Timing Belt Replacement: OBD-II Indicators and Skip Symptoms
How OBD-II helps identify timing belt condition: P0016 camshaft correlation, P0300 misfires after a skip, Live Data confirmation — plus replacement intervals for common engines.
A timing belt gives no warning before it snaps — but OBD-II registers signs of deterioration before the critical moment, and records the consequences immediately after a skip. Understanding these signals can save an engine from total destruction.
Why Timing Belts Are More Dangerous Than Chains
Unlike a timing chain, a belt:
- Makes no noise before breaking — rubber construction is silent until the end
- Snaps suddenly — without warning during cold starts or under load
- Consequences are catastrophic on interference engines (most modern designs)
Interference engines (valves will contact pistons on timing skip):
- Volkswagen/Audi TDI, 1.6/2.0 FSI
- Ford TDCi 1.6/2.0 (Peugeot/Citroën EP6, DV/DW)
- Toyota D-4D, 1.4 D-4D
- Fiat/Alfa MultiJet 1.3/1.9/2.0
Non-interference engines (less risky):
- Honda SOHC engines
- Some Subaru EJ (but not all variants)
OBD-II and Belt Condition: Before a Skip
OBD-II cannot directly measure rubber wear. But indirect signs exist:
P0011 / P0012 / P0021 / P0022 — Camshaft Timing
If the belt tensioner weakens from heat or wear — the belt starts to “float”:
- P0011 — Camshaft Bank 1 Advance: too much advance (belt slipping forward)
- P0012 — Camshaft Bank 1 Retard: phase delay (belt slipping backward)

Checking at Critical Mileage
Before a scheduled belt change (or if you don’t know the service history):
- Warm the engine to operating temperature
- At idle, check
Camshaft Position Actual vs Target - Rev to 2,000–3,000 RPM and recheck
- If deviation increases with RPM → belt or tensioner fault
OBD-II After a Timing Belt Skip
A 1–2 tooth skip isn’t always immediate catastrophe. OBD-II records:
P0016 / P0017 — Camshaft-Crankshaft Correlation: The Key Marker
P0016 = Crankshaft-Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1, Sensor A)
Cause on belt skip:
- Crankshaft and camshaft are no longer synchronised
- P0016 — camshaft ahead of normal (belt skipped in direction of rotation)
- P0017 — camshaft behind normal
Live Data after skip:
CKP-CMP Correlation: value outside normal range (manufacturer-specific)Injection Timing Actual: may deviate sharply from target- Engine may not start at all (2+ teeth skip)
P0300 and P030X — Misfires
When belt skips 1 tooth the engine starts but:
- Ignition timing is disrupted → unstable combustion
- P0300 — random misfires across all cylinders
Misfire Count per Cylinder: all cylinders elevated simultaneously → systemic issue (timing), not a single cylinder problem
P0341 / P0366 — Camshaft Position Sensor Signal
- P0341 — CMP signal out of range
- Occurs when belt has skipped far enough that ECU can no longer read correct synchronisation
Diagnostic Algorithm When Timing Belt Is Suspected
1. P0016/P0017 + P0300 present?
→ Check timing belt BEFORE starting (remove cover or use borescope)
2. P0016/P0017 without P0300?
→ Possibly VVT actuator (oil-dependent), but belt also suspect
3. Engine won't start + P0016 in memory?
→ STOP. Do not crank starter. Remove belt cover, check valve positions.
Critical: With P0016 after a suspected belt skip — do NOT attempt to start! Further starter cranking can bend valves on interference engines.

General rule: Manufacturer = maximum under ideal conditions. Real-world servicing = 80% of that figure. When buying a used car — if service history unknown → replace immediately.
What Gets Replaced Along with the Belt
Always replace at the same time:
- Tensioner pulley
- Guide/idler pulley
- Water pump — if belt-driven (usually is)
OBD check after replacement:
- Clear P0016/P0017 codes
- Start engine, check
