Throttle Body and Idle Control: OBD-II Diagnostics — P0120, P0506, P2135
How to diagnose the electronic throttle body (ETB) and idle control through OBD-II: P0120, P0122, P0506, P0507, P2135 codes — Live Data checks without workshop equipment.
The throttle body is the heart of airflow management. Modern vehicles use an Electronic Throttle Body (ETB) with no mechanical cable to the accelerator pedal. OBD-II provides full access to ETB parameters and enables fault identification without removing the unit.
Electronic Throttle Body (ETB): How It Works
The ETB consists of:
- A stepper or DC motor
- Two throttle position sensors (TPS1 and TPS2 — redundant)
- A return spring (normally open position approximately 7°)
The ECU constantly compares TPS Target Position (desired) with TPS Actual Position (actual). A difference > 3–5° sustained over time → fault code stored.
Key OBD-II ETB Codes

Critical code P2135: Means the two throttle position sensors show different values. ECU refuses control and enters limp mode.
ETB Live Data: What to Monitor
Throttle Position Sensor 1 (TPS1) and TPS2
Normal values:
- At idle: TPS1 ≈ 10–15%, TPS2 ≈ 10–15%
- At WOT (pedal to floor): TPS1 ≈ 90–95%, TPS2 ≈ 90–95%
- Difference between TPS1 and TPS2: < 5% — at any position
Live Data graph test:
- Slowly press the pedal from idle to full throttle
- Both TPS should move in synchrony
- If one “jumps” or “lags” → carbon deposits or wear
Throttle Position Target vs Actual
- Target vs Actual: difference < 2° during steady driving
- Sustained > 5° → ETB motor weak (carbon on throttle plate or motor wear)
P0506 / P0507 — Idle Speed: Too Low / Too High
These codes indicate unstable or incorrect idle. Causes fall into two categories:
Air Path Problems (Mechanical):
- Vacuum hose leak → P0507 (extra air → RPM above target)
- Clogged IAC valve (on older vehicles with separate IAC valve)
ETB / Adaptation Problems:
- Carbon deposits on throttle plate → ETB can’t hold target position
- ETB adaptation reset after battery disconnection

Throttle Body Cleaning and Adaptation Procedure via OBD
Step 1: Cleaning
Dirty throttle plate → ETB can’t control position correctly.
- Remove intake hose ahead of throttle
- Clean with carburettor cleaner (or specialist throttle body cleaner)
- Manually rotate the throttle plate (ignition off)
Step 2: Adaptation via OBD
After mechanical cleaning or ETB replacement — adaptation is MANDATORY.
Procedure (Car Diagnostics):
- Service Functions → Throttle Body Adaptation
- Cold engine, air conditioning off
- Process: ECU performs a series of throttle positions (audible clicks)
- Result:
Throttle Adaptation Status= Complete
WARNING: On VW/Audi without adaptation after cleaning or replacement → unstable idle, pull-away judder.
EPC (Electronic Power Control): VAG Specifics
On Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, SEAT — the ETB system is called EPC.
EPC light + CEL:
- P2101 + P2135 → limp mode: maximum 1,500–2,000 RPM
- Car can still drive but with no normal throttle response

The throttle body is straightforward to diagnose via OBD-II. 80% of problems are solved by cleaning and adaptation; replacement of the unit is only needed with genuine TPS or ETB motor failure.
