Any OBD-II adapter based on a genuine ELM327 v1.5 or newer chip with Bluetooth Classic (SPP) works with Car Diagnostics. If you are buying your first adapter, look for one with the original ELM327 v1.5 chip or an STN1110 from OBDLink. Cheap “Mini ELM327” units under 5–7 USD are counterfeit in roughly 99% of cases — they emulate the chipset poorly and cause random disconnections.

The OBD-II adapter market splits into three categories by chipset. The chip determines connection stability, polling speed, and compatibility with modern vehicles.

Why should I avoid the cheapest Mini ELM327 adapters?
Online marketplaces (AliExpress, Amazon third-party) are flooded with Mini ELM327 units priced at 5–7 USD. They look identical to the real product, but inside they use a cheap PIC or CH340G microcontroller that emulates — and poorly — the ELM327 instruction set.
Common problems with counterfeit adapters:
- Connection drops every 2–5 minutes because the Bluetooth stack is buggy
- False DTC codes — the emulator decodes ECU responses incorrectly, showing faults that do not exist
- No Mode 09 support — the adapter cannot read the vehicle VIN, a basic OBD-II function
- Battery drain — counterfeits often fail to enter sleep mode after the ignition is off, draining the car battery in 2–3 days
How to spot a counterfeit: a genuine ELM327 v1.5 chip costs the manufacturer roughly 8 USD in small wholesale. A retail price of 5 USD cannot physically contain the original chip. If the adapter costs less than 10 USD, it is almost certainly a counterfeit.
Bluetooth SPP vs BLE — which one should I choose?

For Car Diagnostics you must use an SPP adapter. Although the Vgate iCar Pro supports both modes, diagnostics runs over Bluetooth Classic. BLE-only adapters from other brands will not work — this is an ELM327-standard limitation, not an app restriction.

Beyond the chip, adapters differ in how they talk to your phone — and this is where most bad purchases happen.

Car Diagnostics runs on Android 7.0+; there is no iPhone build. If a seller pushes a BLE or WiFi adapter because “it also works on iOS”, that is not an argument for this app — you need SPP.
What else to check
- Power LED: it should light up the moment the adapter is plugged in
- Size: a compact one can stay in the port permanently; a bulky one has to come out after every drive
- Sleep mode: good models sleep after the ignition is off. Cheap clones do not, and will flatten the battery in 2–3 days of parking
- Firmware updates: OBDLink and BlueDriver update through the vendor app; clones never do
What not to buy
- The blue “Mini ELM327” for $3–7 — 99% of these are fakes without the real chip
- “ELM327 v2.3” promising TPMS, Airbag and ABS support — at Mode 01 every adapter is identical; extended functions need licensed manufacturer software
- “NFC OBD-II” — no such protocol exists, it is pure marketing
- Anything labelled BLE-only or Wi-Fi-only — it will not connect to the app
