Suzuki: common OBD-II codes and where they come from

Suzuki engines are simple by modern standards, which makes their fault patterns predictable. Here are the codes that recur and what each usually turns out to be.

Suzuki has generally resisted the complexity race. Naturally aspirated engines, port injection on most of the range, and relatively modest electronics mean the fault list is short and repetitive — which is good news when something goes wrong.

OBD-II support

Suzuki adopted OBD-II on schedule for each market: 1996 in the US, 2001 for petrol in the EU. Most models from that point use ISO 9141-2 or KWP2000, moving to CAN from around 2006–2008 depending on model.

The codes that recur

P0171 — system too lean

The most common Suzuki code by a wide margin, and on these engines it is nearly always unmetered air rather than a fuel problem.

The intake boot between the airbox and the throttle body hardens and cracks, usually on the underside where you cannot see it. Vacuum hoses to the brake booster and PCV perish similarly.

P0420 — catalyst efficiency

Common on higher-mileage examples. Before condemning the catalyst, check for an exhaust leak near the downstream sensor and check the upstream sensor’s switch rate — an ageing sensor produces this code with a healthy catalyst.

P0300 and cylinder-specific misfires

Ignition coils and plugs are the usual answer, and Suzuki coil packs have a reasonable but not exceptional service life. The swap test settles it in one drive: P0301 to P0304 and P0300 random misfire.

P0335 — crankshaft position sensor

A recognised weak point across several Suzuki engines. The classic symptom is a car that cuts out when hot and restarts once it cools, which is a thermally failing sensor rather than a fuel problem.

P0440, P0442 and P0455 — EVAP

Common on older examples, mostly from perished vapour hoses and cracked canisters underneath the car. Check the cap, then get a smoke test rather than replacing parts speculatively: P0442 small EVAP leak.

P0505 and P0507 — idle control

Beyond the codes

Corrosion. Suzuki underbodies from the 2000s do not love salted roads. Rear subframes, brake lines and exhaust hangers deserve inspection on any used purchase — underbody rust inspection and salt and corrosion protection.

Adapter compatibility
