P0171 and P0174: lean mixture — seven causes, and why the sensor is not one of them

The most common code after misfires. It means the module is adding fuel and still cannot keep up. Seven causes in order of probability, and how to narrow the search using fuel trims alone.

P0171 “System Too Lean, Bank 1” and P0174 for bank 2 are among the most common codes there are. They are also among those where the most money gets wasted.

What the code actually says

The control module calculates how much fuel to deliver from the airflow meter or the pressure sensor. The oxygen sensor then reports what actually happened.

When the sensor says “too much oxygen”, the module adds fuel — that is short-term trim. If it has to keep adding, the correction migrates into long-term trim. When long-term hits its ceiling around +25 %, P0171 appears.

So the oxygen sensor is not at fault — it is the one component doing its job correctly. It is the messenger.

Seven causes in order of probability

1. A vacuum leak downstream of the airflow meter

The most common cause, roughly half of all cases. Air enters the intake bypassing measurement: a split hose, a perished vacuum line, a burnt manifold gasket, a failed crankcase ventilation valve.

The signature: trim is high at idle and almost normal at high RPM. A small opening admits a fixed volume; at idle that is a large share of total flow, at 3000 RPM it is negligible.

2. A contaminated mass airflow sensor

Film on the sensing element under-reports flow. The module believes there is less air than there is and delivers less fuel.

The signature is the mirror image: trim rises with load. The sensor itself is covered in the airflow meter guide.

3. Low fuel pressure

A dying pump, a clogged filter, a stuck regulator. The injector opens for the calculated duration but delivers less.

The signature: worst under load and on gradients, nearly normal at idle. Often accompanied by hesitation on hard throttle.

4. Dirty injectors

The spray pattern is disrupted and some fuel does not atomise. Trim climbs gradually, over months.

5. An exhaust leak upstream of the oxygen sensor

A cracked manifold or a burnt joint. On exhaust pulses, atmospheric air is drawn in, the sensor sees oxygen and reports lean — while the mixture is actually fine.

A treacherous cause, because there is nothing to find in the intake. The signature is an unfamiliar noise under load.

6. Secondary air injection stuck open

Rarer, but produces an identical picture. Covered in the P0410 guide.

7. The oxygen sensor itself

Last on the list, not first. An aged sensor can under-report. But replacing it first is the classic mistake that cures nothing.

Narrowing it down in five minutes

Display long-term trim and compare across three states:

One more check: compare the banks. P0171 without P0174 on a V engine means a local cause — a leak on one side. Both codes together means a shared one: airflow meter, fuel, pressure.

What it risks

A lean mixture burns hotter. Consequences, in escalating order:

  • Power loss and higher consumption — the module compensates with ignition timing.
  • Misfires, P0300 — the mixture is too lean to ignite reliably.
  • Catalyst overheating and eventually P0420.
  • On turbo engines under load, detonation — and that means pistons. The mechanics are in the knock sensor guide.

So it should not be postponed, even though the car drives.

What to do, in order

  1. Read trims across the three states in the table above.
  2. Inspect hoses and vacuum lines, especially at bends.
  3. Check the crankcase ventilation valve — cheap, and often the answer.
  4. Assess the airflow meter from its readings under load.
  5. Check fuel pressure if the picture points there.
  6. Listen to the exhaust for leaks.
  7. The oxygen sensor last.

In short

  • The code means fuel is short, not that the sensor failed.
  • Half of all cases are vacuum leaks downstream of the airflow meter.
  • The state where trim is worst identifies the cause.
  • P0171 without P0174 is local; both together is systemic.
  • Do not ignore it: misfires, catalyst damage, and detonation follow.
