Cloning history

3. Protocol support test

Via AT DP (Display Protocol). Genuine supports 12 protocols:

  • ISO 9141-2 (K-Line)
  • KWP2000 fast/slow init
  • PWM (Ford)
  • VPW (GM pre-2008)
  • ISO 15765-4 CAN (500 kbps)
  • ISO 15765-4 CAN (250 kbps)
  • SAE J1939 CAN (500 kbps)
  • User-defined 1-4

Clone: often only CAN 500 kbps, rest — timeout. Test on Ford Focus 2003 (PWM) — clone won’t connect.

4. Multi-frame (VIN) test

Genuine reliably reassembles ISO-TP multi-frame — 17-char VIN comes intact.

Clone: 40-50% chance VIN arrives corrupted (missing byte, extra frame, extra spaces). Symptom in Car Diagnostics: “VIN not detected” or a broken VIN like WVWZZZ1KZ9W12456X.

5. Voltage protection

Genuine survives “brown-out” — voltage drop to 6V during cranking.

Clone: often burns on first winter start (voltage drops to 5-7V, clone’s regulator can’t cope) → adapter dead after 1-3 starts.

6. Price
