Timing belt or chain: what actually matters when buying and servicing
A "lifetime" chain is marketing, not a fact. Real service life, the signs of stretch, the cost of getting it wrong, and what diagnostics shows.
The belt-or-chain question is usually framed as a choice between “cheap to replace” and “never replace”. That framing is wrong: both have a service life, both have a cost of failure, and the difference is not where people look for it.
What the timing drive does
It synchronises crankshaft and camshaft rotation. While that synchronisation holds, the valves open exactly when the piston expects them to.
When it is lost, piston meets valve. On most modern engines that means bent valves, and at worst a head, pistons, and a rebuild.
That is the cost of failure, and it is identical for belt and chain.
The belt: an honest schedule
Service life is a factory interval in miles or years, and the second matters more than the first. Rubber ages with time and heat, not only mileage. A low-mileage car with an old belt is not safer, it is more dangerous.
What is replaced with it: idlers, tensioner, and usually the water pump. A seized idler shreds a new belt just as reliably as a worn belt shreds itself.
The belt’s advantage: replacement is planned, predictable, and cheaper than chain work.
The drawback: it has to be done, and when buying used you never truly know whether it was.
The chain: why “lifetime” misleads
A chain genuinely is designed for a longer life. But “for the life of the engine” means the life the manufacturer assumed, not the one the owner is expecting.
What actually wears:
- The chain itself — it lengthens through wear in the pin joints.
- Guides and shoes — the plastic abrades and breaks up.
- The hydraulic tensioner — losing the ability to take up slack.
The audible sign: a rattle for the first seconds of a cold start — the classic early symptom. At first it appears only occasionally, later every time.
Replacement cost is usually higher than a belt, sometimes several times, because access is harder.
What diagnostics shows
Here the timing drive meets electronics, and this is the most convenient way to catch the problem before the failure.
Code P0016 — crankshaft/camshaft position correlation. That is a direct indicator of a stretched chain or a slipped belt; full treatment in its own article.

An important detail: P0016 appears once the discrepancy is already substantial. A cold-start rattle is audible earlier than the module acknowledges a problem. So the ear is the early sensor here and the scanner is confirmation.
What to do when buying used
On a belt:
- Ask for replacement records — with date and mileage.
- No records means budget the replacement immediately. That is not pessimism, it is risk arithmetic.
- Check the manufacture date if the belt is visible.
On a chain:
- Listen to a cold start — the main check, and the seller usually warms the car before you arrive. Insist on cold.
- Read the codes and check whether they were cleared recently; mechanics in the readiness monitors article.
- Ask about oil level history: oil starvation kills a chain faster than mileage.
What extends the life of both
- Regular oil changes. For a chain that is directly critical: the hydraulic tensioner runs on oil.
- The correct viscosity — covered in the viscosity and approvals article.
- Warming up without harsh loads in the first minutes.
- Never running on a low oil level — not even occasionally.
In short
- The cost of failure is identical: bent valves, sometimes a rebuild.
- A belt’s life is measured in years too, not only miles.
- “Lifetime chain” is a marketing formula, not a guarantee.
- A cold-start rattle is audible before P0016 ever appears.
