VW Polo: OBD diagnostics across the small-engine generations
Small VAG engines, big VAG documentation. The Polo shares almost everything with the Fabia and Ibiza, which makes its fault list easy to research.
The Polo shares its platform, engines and gearboxes with the Skoda Fabia and SEAT Ibiza. Anything documented for one applies to the others.

The engines
1.0 TSI three-cylinder — the volume engine in later cars. Turbocharged, direct injected.
1.2 and 1.4 TSI — earlier four-cylinder turbo petrols.
1.6 TDI — the diesel, with the full after-treatment stack.
Naturally aspirated 1.0 and 1.2 — simpler, and generally the least troublesome.
TSI: what to know
Timing chain, on early 1.2 and 1.4 TSI
Early production of these engines has a documented tensioner concern, and a chain that jumps on an interference engine bends valves.
A rattle on cold start is the warning, and it is worth listening for on any used example of that era. Later engines revised the components.

Intake valve carbon
Direct injection, so deposits accumulate. Misfires that survive new coils and plugs point here.

Coolant, particularly on the 1.0 TSI
Small turbocharged engines work hard, and the cooling system is a wear area. Plastic housings and electric pumps are consumables.
The electric pump can fail with no external leak, so watch the coolant temperature curve rather than looking for a puddle: P0128 thermostat deep dive, P0116 to P0119 coolant sensor performance and water pump failure signs.
Check the coolant level more attentively than on a larger engine. There is less of it, so a small loss matters more.
Boost
Underboost is usually a split hose or a loose clamp: turbocharger boost leak diagnostics.
Diesel
Standard modern diesel considerations, and short journeys are the problem:
- DPF — soot load and regeneration distance: DPF light on and P2459 regeneration frequency.
- EGR carbon: P0400 and P0403 EGR flow.
- Intake flaps, a VAG recurring item: P2015 intake swirl flaps.
A small diesel used for short urban journeys is the wrong vehicle for that use, and no repair changes that: short trips and engine damage and diesel versus petrol, which to buy.
DSG
Where fitted, the usual rules: wet-clutch versions need a genuine fluid and filter service, and skipping it is the main cause of mechatronic complaints.
Some low-speed hesitation is normal dual-clutch behaviour. Shudder and slip are not.
P0700 transmission control system malfunction and transmission shudder at low speed.
Electrical and water
A weak battery produces communication codes across modules, and a replacement generally needs registering: battery replacement and registration.
Blocked scuttle drains put water into footwells and onto modules: damp carpet and electrical faults and water leak into cabin.
The practical buying case
A Polo is often a first car or a second car, bought on a modest budget, and the checks that matter are the cheap ones.
- Cold-start it yourself and listen for chain rattle on an early TSI.
- Check the coolant level and its history.
- Check the oil level and service records.
- Check soot load if it is a diesel, and ask about journey length.
- Establish DSG fluid history where fitted.
- Check the carpets for damp.

Record a cold start with coolant temperature logged — an ELM327 adapter and the free tier of the app are all it takes. On a small turbocharged engine, the cooling system is where the expensive surprises live.
