A damp carpet and strange faults: the link people miss
Control modules live under seats and in sills. How moisture turns into codes in systems nobody touched.
A damp carpet gets treated as a comfort and smell issue. In fact it is an electronics issue: in a modern car, control modules and dozens of connectors live under the floor and under the seats.
What is actually down there
The body control module — often under the dashboard or a seat.
The airbag module — usually centrally, under the console or the floor. The most critical of all.
Seat connectors — occupancy sensor, belt buckle, heating, adjustment.
Harnesses in the sills — running the length of the car.
Infotainment module and amplifier — sometimes under a seat.
In other words: water under the carpet sits exactly where it does the most harm.
How water creates codes
Moisture between connector pins creates parasitic conductivity. A signal that should be discrete becomes blurred.
The consequences:
- Codes in systems nobody touched — the module sees an incorrect signal and logs a fault; mechanics in the ghost codes article.
- Intermittent faults — present or absent depending on humidity and temperature.
- Battery drain — the module never sleeps because it sees “activity”; covered in the parasitic drain article.
- Airbag faults — and that is safety, not inconvenience.
- Contact corrosion — the irreversible part that remains after drying.
Where the water comes from
Sunroof drains — covered in their own article.
The scuttle below the windscreen — blocked with leaves.
Door seals — hardened rubber.
The heater matrix — here it is coolant rather than water: a sweetish smell and an oily film on the glass.
The air conditioning drain — damp only in hot weather.
Wiring grommets in the bulkhead.

The repair order
The sequence is critical here, and it is often broken.
- Find and fix the source. Drying before that is pointless.
- Remove mats and sound deadening completely. The moisture lives underneath, and “airing the cabin” does not remove it.
- Dry it — with heat and ventilation, over several days.
- Inspect the connectors in the wet area; clean and treat corroded ones.
- Only then read the codes. Before drying they mean nothing.
- Clear them and drive several cycles — see what returns.
- Check quiescent current a week later.
The main mistake: replacing a module from a code before drying. A new module in a wet connector produces the same code.
Prevention
- Clear the drains once a season.
- Remove leaves from under the bonnet by the screen each autumn.
- Treat the seals with silicone twice a year.
- Dry the mats in winter — snow off your shoes is the same water.
- Rubber mats with a raised lip in winter — they hold water on top rather than passing it underneath.
