VW Passat B6 and B7: what fails with mileage and what to check when buying

The TSI timing chain, TDI swirl flaps, the DSG mechatronic unit, and oil consumption — four topics that account for most Passat conversations of these generations. What diagnostics can see of each.

On the Passat B6 and B7 the body usually outlives the powertrain. So both buying and owning one comes down to four topics.

1. The TSI timing chain

The best-known issue of these generations. Early tensioners fail to hold tension and the chain goes slack — most noticeable on a cold start.

Signs:

  • A rattle for the first 1–3 seconds after a cold start, growing longer over time.
  • Code P0016 — crankshaft and camshaft positions disagreeing.
  • Alongside it P0011 or P0014: the cam phaser cannot reach its commanded position.

When inspecting one to buy, a cold start is mandatory — it is the only way to hear the chain.

2. Oil consumption on TSI engines

Closely related to the previous point. On some engines of these generations oil consumption is noticeably above normal.

What to check:

  • Dipstick level and how often topping up is needed.
  • Spark plug condition — oily deposits.
  • Frequently alongside carbon on the intake valves, characteristic of direct injection: covered in GDI carbon buildup.

Diagnostics cannot see this directly, but it sees the consequences: misfires P0300, rough idle.

3. Swirl flaps on TDI diesels

Code P2015. The plastic actuator linkage on the intake manifold flaps disintegrates from soot and heat.

Signs: lost low-end torque, smoke, limp mode, frequently alongside P0401 — a clogged EGR valve.

4. DSG and the mechatronic unit

The dual-clutch transmission. The most common complaints: jerkiness at low speed, delayed pull-away, shift shunt.

What to look at: codes from the P0700 group onwards, transmission fluid temperature, shift behaviour in live data.

An important distinction: some low-speed jerkiness is designed behaviour of the layout, not a fault. Limp mode locked in one gear is not; covered in the transmission guide.

What else to check

Water pump and thermostat. On some engines they form one assembly with a plastic housing that cracks. Signs: P0128, a cold heater, coolant leaks.

Purge valve. Produces P0455, P0442, and sometimes unstable idle. EVAP covered separately.

Inspection order when buying

  1. A cold start is mandatory — listen for the chain in the first seconds.
  2. Read all codes, pending and permanent included.
  3. Check for P0016, P0011, P2015 — three codes that determine the cost of ownership from here.
  4. Check monitor readiness: all not ready means the memory was just cleared.
  5. On a diesel, check particulate filter regeneration statistics.
  6. Test drive with boost and temperature logging.
