Skoda Octavia and Superb are among the most popular VAG group vehicles on the market. Octavia III/IV (1.4 TSI, 1.6/2.0 TDI) and Superb III (1.5 TSI, 2.0 TSI, 2.0 TDI) share engines and transmissions with VW Golf, Audi A3, and SEAT Leon — so the characteristic fault codes are very similar, with their own nuances.
EA211 1.4 TSI / 1.5 TSI (Octavia III, Superb III): Petrol Engines
P0016 / P0017 — EA211 1.4 TSI Timing Chain
The EA211 1.4 TSI on early Octavia III (2013–2016) inherited the plastic tensioner from the EA111.
Symptoms:
- Metallic rattle on cold start (first 5 seconds)
- P0016 or P0017 at 60,000–100,000 km mileage
Actions:
- Preventive timing chain replacement at 80,000 km
- If rattling — immediate diagnosis (do not drive to failure)
P0299 — TSI Underboost
1.4 TSI (CZDA/CZDB) on Octavia III and Superb III:
- N75 valve (Wastegate Control) — plastic housing cracks under thermal cycles
- Intercooler boost pipe leak from Turbo → Intercooler

P0401 — Insufficient EGR Flow
The 1.6 TDI EGR valve is the most common fault source on Skoda TDI models.
Cause: Carbon build-up in the EGR valve after 60,000–80,000 km of urban driving.

- Bosch CP4.2 on 2.0 TDI — more reliable pump than CP4.1 in BMW
- Larger volume DPF → regeneration needed less frequently
P0299 — Underboost (2.0 TDI)
- VGT (Variable Geometry Turbine) vanes — carbon deposits seizing vanes

The DSG DQ250 (DSG6 wet clutch) is fitted on more powerful Octavia RS and Superb 2.0 TSI versions.
More reliable than the DQ200, but has its own issues:
- P0716 — Turbine speed sensor: incorrect signal
- P0712 — ATF temperature: signal too low

Skoda-Specific: Multifunction Display and U-Codes
Skoda uses the VAG CAN bus with an extended ECU set. After a repair or battery discharge, U-codes (communication loss) may appear.
- U0100 — Lost communication with ECM
- U0415 — Gateway module: implausible data
- U0155 — Instrument cluster: failure
Typical cause: Battery below 12.4V or poor contact at the central gateway connector (Gateway J533).
