Toyota Land Cruiser and Prado: OBD diagnostics on a long-life SUV
These are bought to last two decades, which changes what matters. The engine rarely lets you down; the drivetrain oils and the emissions hardware are where attention pays.
Land Cruisers are bought on the expectation of twenty years and several hundred thousand miles. That expectation is largely justified, and it changes what a diagnostic routine should focus on: not catching sudden failures, but tracking slow drift in things that are never serviced.

The drivetrain oils nobody changes
This is the highest-value item on the whole list, and no code will ever warn you.
A Land Cruiser has a transfer case, a front differential and a rear differential — often with a locking mechanism. All contain oil. Almost none of it gets changed on schedule, because the service book buries it and the symptoms take a decade to appear.
The early warning is a whine that differs between acceleration and overrun. That is gear mesh, and an oil change at that point sometimes prevents a rebuild.

If the vehicle has been used off-road or through water crossings, add water ingress to the list — differential breathers let water in when hot axles hit cold water. Driving through flood water.
Diesel emissions hardware
The D-4D engines carry the modern stack, and the most common complaints come from a use pattern mismatch: a vehicle designed for long distances used for short school runs.
DPF. Watch soot load and regeneration distance rather than waiting for the lamp. DPF light on and P2002 and P2463.
EGR carbon. Commanded versus actual position is the diagnosis: P0404.
Injectors. Correction values flag a failing injector before it becomes a misfire: EDC17 correction values and common rail injector diagnostics.
Oil dilution. Repeated interrupted regenerations dilute the oil with diesel and the dipstick level rises. Above maximum means change it. On an engine expected to last twenty years, this matters more than on most.
Turbo and boost
Underboost is usually a split hose or a sticking variable-geometry mechanism rather than a failed turbocharger. On a vehicle that tows, boost problems show as power that fades under load.

Petrol V6 and V8
Where fitted, generally undramatic. The usual attention points:
- Variable valve timing solenoids clogged by sludge from long oil intervals: VVT P0011 and P0014.
- Misfires from coils and plugs: P0301 to P0304.
- Catalyst codes at high mileage — rule out an exhaust leak and an ageing upstream sensor first: P0420 and P0133.
Towing, which is what these are for
Transmission fluid temperature is the reading that matters most on a long tow, and it is the one nobody watches until the warning appears.
Every 10 °C above about 95 °C roughly halves fluid life. On a vehicle expected to last two decades, that arithmetic compounds.

Also worth logging: coolant temperature on long climbs, since a fully loaded vehicle towing uphill in summer has the least cooling margin it will ever have. Temperature gauge fluctuating.
Corrosion, which no scan will find
On a twenty-year vehicle this is the real enemy, not the electronics. Chassis rails, brake lines, suspension mounting points and exhaust hangers.
Underbody rust inspection and salt and corrosion protection.
Be clear-eyed that this is where a scan tool stops being useful: scan tool limits.
Older examples and OBD-II
Land Cruisers stay on the road long enough that pre-OBD-II examples are still in daily use. Anything before 1996 in the US or 2001–2004 in Europe may respond partially or not at all to generic requests.

Buying used
These hold value, which means a high price for a vehicle that may have worked hard.
- Differential and transfer case oil history. Ask directly. Most owners cannot answer.
- Soot load on any diesel, plus distance since regeneration.
- Oil level — above maximum means regeneration dilution.
- Underbody condition, which matters more than any code.
- Readiness monitors — all “not ready” means recent clearing: OBD readiness monitors explained.
- Evidence of water crossings — check the differential oils for milky contamination.
