Ford Fiesta: common OBD faults across the EcoBoost years
One question dominates a used Fiesta purchase, and it is about a belt that runs in engine oil. Everything else is secondary.
The Fiesta has been one of Europe’s best-selling cars for decades, which means its faults are exceptionally well documented.
For anything built with the 1.0 EcoBoost, one item dominates.

The wet timing belt
The 1.0 EcoBoost uses a timing belt that runs in engine oil. It is efficient and quiet, and it has a specific failure mode that turns a maintenance item into an engine failure.
The belt degrades and sheds material into the oil. That debris blocks the oil pickup strainer, which starves the engine of oil pressure — and an engine without oil pressure destroys its bearings quickly.
This is the single most important thing to establish on a used EcoBoost Fiesta.
- Check the belt service history. Treat a missing record as a repair cost, not a maybe.
- Revised belt designs and shortened intervals have been introduced. Ask which applies.
- Watch oil pressure behaviour as the early warning: oil light flickering at idle and P0520 to P0523 oil pressure sensor.

A flicker of the oil lamp at hot idle on one of these engines is not something to monitor.
Cooling, on the 1.0 EcoBoost
The second documented concern on this engine, and a related one.
Coolant system components — including a degas hose and, on some production, the cylinder head design — have been the subject of recalls and service actions in various markets.
Overheating on this engine has caused serious damage, so:
- Check coolant level frequently, not just at service.
- Log the coolant temperature curve rather than watching the gauge: temperature gauge fluctuating and P0217 engine over-temperature.

Direct injection carbon
Standard for the architecture. Intake valve deposits build over time, producing misfires that survive new coils and plugs.
GDI carbon buildup and P0301 to P0304 cylinder misfire.
Boost
Underboost is usually a split charge pipe or a loose clamp rather than a failed turbocharger: turbocharger boost leak diagnostics and P0299 and P0234.
Powershift, on earlier automatics
Some Fiestas of a particular era used a dry dual-clutch automatic that generated substantial complaint and, in some markets, legal action.
Symptoms: shudder when pulling away, hesitation, and warning messages.
On any used automatic Fiesta of that period, drive it in traffic — low speed is where these reveal themselves: P0810 and P0811 clutch slippage and transmission shudder at low speed.
The 1.5 TDCi diesel
The usual after-treatment stack, and the usual short-journey mismatch:
- DPF: DPF light on and P2459 regeneration frequency.
- EGR carbon: P0400 and P0403 EGR flow.
Oil dilution from interrupted regenerations raises the dipstick level — which matters doubly on an engine where oil condition determines belt life.
Electrical
A weak battery produces communication codes across unrelated systems, which looks like several faults: P0560 to P0563 system voltage faults and when the scanner lies about ghost codes.
Buying used
- Wet belt service history. The single most consequential question.
- Oil level and condition, and how often it has been changed.
- Recall status for cooling-related actions.
- Cold-start it yourself and listen.
- Drive an automatic in traffic, not just on open road.
- Check soot load on a diesel.
- Check readiness and permanent codes: Mode 0A permanent DTCs.
