Traction control cutting in on dry roads: a sensor, not the weather
The lamp flickers and the engine cuts power on a dry straight road. The system is not malfunctioning — it is reacting to data that is wrong.
Traction control compares wheel speeds. If one is turning faster than the others, it concludes that wheel is spinning and reduces engine torque, brakes that wheel, or both.
When it activates on a dry road with no wheelspin, the comparison is being fed wrong data.

Tyres, first
The most common cause, and entirely mechanical.
The system assumes all four wheels have the same rolling radius. Anything that breaks that assumption produces genuine speed differences that look like slip.
Causes:
- Different tyre sizes across an axle.
- Very different tread depths — two new tyres against two worn ones.
- Significantly different pressures.
- A space saver spare fitted. This will activate the system on many vehicles, correctly.
- A tyre of a different construction or brand across an axle.
Check all four tyres before anything else: size marking, brand, and tread depth measured rather than estimated.
Wheel and tyre size change electronics and tyre rotation and wear patterns.
A failing wheel speed sensor
An intermittent sensor produces a momentary wrong reading, the system sees an implausible difference, and it intervenes.
The signature: activation over bumps, at a particular speed, or when turning — conditions that flex a damaged cable.
The cable is the usual failure, not the sensor. It flexes with every suspension movement, in the road spray, for years: C0035 to C0050 wheel speed sensor codes and ABS wheel speed sensor diagnostics.
The reluctor ring
Debris on the toothed ring adds phantom pulses; damaged teeth remove them. Either produces a wheel that reads wrong at specific rotational positions.
Rust between the ring and its mounting lifts it slightly and changes the air gap. Common on older vehicles in salted climates.
The steering angle sensor
Stability control uses steering angle to know what the driver intended. If its zero point is wrong, the system believes you are turning while you drive straight — and intervenes to correct a turn that is not happening.
Very common after an alignment where the calibration step was skipped: steering wheel off centre, C0051 steering position sensor and steering angle sensor calibration.
The yaw and lateral acceleration sensor
Reports the vehicle’s actual rotation. Usually mounted in the centre of the car, and it requires calibration after being disturbed.
A faulty one makes the system believe the car is sliding when it is not.
Low system voltage
The recurring cause of multi-system misbehaviour. A weak battery makes modules produce erratic data.
C1241 ABS battery voltage code and P0560 to P0563 system voltage faults.
When it is not a fault
Some activation is correct and useful.
- Genuine loss of grip, including on a dry road over a manhole cover, diesel spill, or gravel.
- Hard acceleration from a standstill, particularly on a powerful front-wheel-drive car.
- A wet or icy patch you did not notice.
- Tight turns at low speed, where inner and outer wheels legitimately differ.
If it activates once and briefly, that is the system working. Repeated activation on a dry straight road is not.
Switching it off
Most vehicles allow it, and there are legitimate uses: getting out of deep snow or mud, where a little wheelspin helps.
On a public road in normal conditions, leave it on. Stability control is one of the most effective safety systems ever mandated, and disabling it to avoid a warning lamp trades a real safety margin for a cosmetic fix.
Note that on many vehicles the button reduces intervention rather than disabling it entirely, and full stability control usually re-engages above a certain speed.
Sequence
- Check all four tyres — size, brand, tread depth, pressure.
- Check whether a space saver is fitted.
- Note when it activates — bumps, turns, a specific speed.
- Read the codes where your vehicle exposes them.
- Compare all four wheel speeds in live data.
- Check whether an alignment was done recently without calibration.
- Check system voltage.
