Steering wheel off centre after alignment: what went wrong
A wheel that sits crooked while the car tracks straight is not cosmetic. It means the alignment was done incorrectly, and it affects the safety systems.
You collect the car after a wheel alignment. It tracks straight, but the steering wheel sits a few degrees off centre.
That is not a cosmetic detail to live with. It means the geometry was set incorrectly, and on a modern car it has consequences beyond appearance.

How it happens
Front toe is adjusted using track rods, one on each side. The total toe determines whether the car tracks straight; the balance between left and right determines where the wheel sits.
Adjust one side more than the other and you get the correct total with the wheel off centre.
A proper alignment locks the steering wheel straight before adjusting, so the balance is right by construction. Skipping that step is how this happens.
Why it matters on a modern car
The steering angle sensor
Stability control compares where the wheels are pointed with where the car is going. Its zero point is calibrated to the steering wheel position.
A wheel off centre means the sensor’s zero is wrong. The system then believes the car is turning slightly while it drives straight — and either intervenes when it should not, or fails to when it should.

Driver assistance systems
Lane keeping and adaptive cruise use steering angle as an input. A wrong zero degrades them, and on some vehicles disables them.
Tyre wear
If the wheel is off centre because toe is unbalanced, the tyres are scrubbing. That shows as feathering or edge wear over a few thousand kilometres.

If it was not the alignment
The same symptom has other causes worth eliminating.
Impact damage. A kerb strike or a serious pothole can bend a component. If the wheel went off centre suddenly rather than after a service, this is the likely cause: pothole damage: what to check.
Worn steering or suspension components. Play in a track rod end, a ball joint or a bush lets geometry wander: suspension bushes wear symptoms.
The wheel refitted incorrectly. After column, airbag or clockspring work, the wheel can be replaced one spline out. That produces a fixed offset with perfect geometry underneath.
Rear axle geometry. If the rear wheels do not point straight, the front must compensate for the car to travel straight — and the wheel ends up off centre. A four-wheel alignment is the only way to detect this, and it is why front-only alignments sometimes fail to fix a pull.
Separating pull from off-centre

Getting it fixed properly
Go back to whoever did the alignment. A wheel off centre after their work is their work to correct, and it is a straightforward adjustment.
Ask for:
- A four-wheel alignment, not front-only.
- A printout of before and after figures.
- The steering wheel locked straight during adjustment.
- A steering angle sensor calibration afterwards.
That last step is the one most commonly omitted, and it is the one that matters for the safety systems.
What to check afterwards
- The wheel is straight on a level road at a steady speed.
- No warning lamps for stability control or driver assistance.
- The steering angle value reads approximately zero when driving straight, where your vehicle exposes it.
- No new tyre wear pattern developing over the following weeks.
Pair an ELM327 adapter, open the free tier of the app and check the steering angle value with the wheels straight. A non-zero reading after an alignment means the calibration step was skipped.
