Steering angle sensor calibration: when ESP goes crazy after wheel alignment
What steering angle sensor (SAS) is, how OBD-II sees its state, why calibration is mandatory after alignment, codes C1234, C1567, and how to do it in 5 min via scanner.
You just had a wheel alignment, and now ESP light flashes, ACC doesn’t work, Lane Keep is disabled. Cause in 90% of cases — steering angle sensor (SAS) lost zero-point. Calibration takes 5 minutes via scanner. Below: when needed, how to do it.
What SAS is
Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) — a sensor on the steering column determining the absolute steering wheel angle (from -720° to +720°) with 0.1-0.5° precision. Used by:
- ESP / ESC: computes where the driver “asks” to go vs where the car actually goes → brake correction
- Lane Keep Assist: steering torque control
- Adaptive Headlights: aim beams into turns
- Adaptive Cruise Control: understand trajectory in curves
- Auto-park: precise positioning
When calibration is needed
Mandatory after:
- Wheel alignment — wheels adjusted, reference changes
- Steering rack or column replacement
- Battery disconnect on some cars (VW, BMW)
- SAS sensor replacement
- Significant front wheel impact — mechanical shift
Typical OBD-II codes

Often accompanied by C0110-C0125 (ABS control unit) — ESP doesn’t work without correct SAS.
How to calibrate
Method 1: Automatic (VAG, BMW, Mercedes since 2015)
- Engine ON, car on level ground
- Steering wheel straight (verified on a straight road)
- Turn wheel fully left to lock
- Turn wheel fully right to lock
- Turn back to center (0°)
- After 5-10 sec SAS auto-detects new zero-point
- Drive 500 m straight → calibration complete
Method 2: Via VCDS (VAG)
- VCDS → Module 03 (ABS Brakes) → Adaptation
- Channel: SAS Zero Position → New Value: 0
- Save
Method 3: Via ISTA (BMW)
- ISTA → Service Functions → Chassis → SAS Calibration
- Follow guided procedure
Method 4: Via Xentry (Mercedes)
- SCN online calibration required for W213+
- No button method, dealer only
Symptoms of uncalibrated SAS
- ESP light on constantly
- Adaptive Cruise Control won’t work
- Lane Keep Assist steers “wrong”
- Adaptive Headlights aim wrong side in turns
- Assist parking refuses to work
What OBD-II shows
Via Mode 22 UDS (SAS-specific PIDs):
- Current angle (°) — 0.1° precision
- Zero position offset — should be ±2°; if ±5°+ → calibrate
- Angular velocity (°/s) — steering rotation speed
- Calibration status: calibrated / not calibrated
Risks without calibration
- ESP triggers “at wrong place” — unpredictable braking on a straight road
- LKA may steer wrong — dangerous above 60 mph
- Turn off ESP via button — legal in city (VW/BMW allow) but not on straight-line driving > 40 mph per EU law
