ABS light after a wheel change: what you disturbed
The lamp appeared right after the tyre fitter finished. That timing is not a coincidence, and the cause is usually something knocked rather than something failed.
An ABS lamp that appears immediately after wheel or tyre work is almost never a coincidence. Something at that corner was disturbed.

What gets disturbed
The sensor cable
The wheel speed sensor cable runs from the hub to the body, clipped along the way. Removing a wheel means working right next to it.
Common outcomes: a clip broken and the cable now hanging, the cable snagged and pulled, or insulation damaged.
Look first. A cable hanging loose or resting against a rotating part is visible without tools.
The sensor knocked or unseated
Sensors sit in a bore with a specified air gap. A knock during removal can move one, and even a small change in gap degrades the signal.
Debris on the reluctor ring
The ring the sensor reads sits behind the hub or inside the bearing. Removing a wheel disturbs brake dust and rust flakes, and the magnetic sensor attracts them.
Extra teeth read as extra pulses, and the module rejects the signal.
The connector
Often in the wheel arch, and easy to catch.
The tyre-related causes
Not damage — the tyres themselves.
A different rolling radius
The ABS module compares all four wheel speeds. A wheel that turns at a different rate because its tyre is a different size or has much more tread flags as implausible.
Fitting two new tyres on one axle creates a genuine difference against the worn pair on the other. Usually within tolerance, but on some vehicles not.
Wheel and tyre size change electronics and tyre rotation and wear patterns.
A space saver spare
Deliberately smaller. Fitting one will illuminate ABS and stability control lamps on many vehicles, and that is correct behaviour rather than a fault.
The lamps normally clear once the full-size wheel is refitted.
TPMS
If the vehicle has tyre pressure monitoring, new wheels or sensors need relearning: TPMS relearn procedure per make and TPMS light will not reset.
That is a separate lamp from ABS, but the two often appear together after wheel work and get confused.
The wheel bearing coincidence
Occasionally the timing really is coincidence, but with a mechanism.
On many vehicles the reluctor ring is part of the wheel bearing. A bearing that was already failing can be pushed past its limit by the handling involved in a wheel change.
The tell: a hum that rises with speed, and changes when cornering gently: humming noise at speed and wheel bearing noise diagnosis.
What to check, in order
- Read the code. It names the corner: C0035 to C0050.
- Look at that corner for a hanging or damaged cable.
- Check the connector in the wheel arch.
- Check the sensor is fully seated.
- Check tyre sizes and tread depths across the axle.
- Check whether a space saver is fitted.
- Compare all four wheel speeds in live data on a straight road.
Steps 2 and 3 resolve most of these, and they cost nothing.
What you lose while the lamp is on
- ABS, so braking reverts to conventional hydraulics.
- Traction and stability control.
- Hill hold, where fitted.
That is a real reduction in wet-weather margin, and it is an inspection failure. Do not defer it.
Going back to the fitter
If it appeared immediately after their work, that is a reasonable conversation to have. A snagged cable or a broken clip is their doing, and a five-minute fix.
Take the code with you. “The ABS light came on” is weaker than “C0040, right front, since you fitted the tyres”.
Try it on the free tier of the app — pair an ELM327 adapter and, where your vehicle exposes them, compare all four wheel speeds. The corner that disagrees is the corner that was disturbed.
