C0035 to C0050: wheel speed sensor codes by corner
The code names the corner, which means the diagnosis starts at one wheel instead of four. Everything after that is inspection rather than deduction.
C-codes are chassis codes, and this range covers the wheel speed sensors that feed ABS, traction control and stability control.

Manufacturers vary, so confirm against the description your tool gives. But the principle holds: the code names the wheel.

What switches off
One sensor failing disables the systems that depend on all four:
- ABS, so braking reverts to conventional hydraulics — the car still stops, without anti-lock.
- Traction control and stability control.
- Hill hold assist and similar features.
- Sometimes the speedometer, on vehicles that derive road speed from wheel sensors.
- Adaptive cruise control, which needs speed data it trusts.
Three lamps and one sensor. That is the pattern: ABS and traction light on together.
Causes, in order
Debris on the sensor or ring
The most common and the cheapest.
These sensors are magnetic, and they attract iron particles — brake dust, road grit, and material from the pads. Enough accumulation distorts the signal.
A build-up on the sensor tip is a clean-and-refit job, not a parts job. Worth looking before ordering anything.
The reluctor or tone ring
The toothed ring the sensor reads is often part of the wheel bearing or the driveshaft.
- Rust between the ring and its seat lifts it and changes the air gap.
- Chipped or missing teeth produce dropouts at a specific wheel position.
- Damage during a bearing or driveshaft job.
On many vehicles the ring is integral to the bearing, which means a ring fault is a bearing replacement: wheel bearing noise diagnosis.
The sensor cable
This is where most failures actually are. The cable runs from a moving suspension component to the body, flexing with every bump and every steering movement, in the path of road spray and salt.
Fatigue at the flex point is common, and it produces an intermittent fault that appears over bumps and clears on smooth roads.
Corrosion at the connector
Usually in the wheel arch. Standard, and worth checking early.
After tyre or wheel work
If the code appeared right after work at that corner, the cable was probably disturbed or the sensor knocked. That is not a coincidence: ABS light after a wheel change.
The test that identifies it
Compare all four wheel speeds while driving straight on a level road.

That last-but-one row is worth its own note. A wheel with a different tyre size or significantly different tread depth genuinely turns at a different rate. That is not a sensor fault: wheel and tyre size change electronics and tyre rotation and wear patterns.
The intermittent version
A cable failing from fatigue produces a fault that appears over bumps, on one side of a road camber, or under braking — and vanishes on a smooth road.
To catch it:
- Log all four wheel speeds during normal driving.
- Note the conditions when the lamp appears.
- Inspect the cable at full lock, where the flex is greatest.
- Check the harness where it clips to the strut or the arm.

What generic OBD-II reaches
ABS codes are chassis codes, not emissions codes, so most vehicles do not expose them through the generic interface. A generic adapter often reports no codes while the ABS lamp is lit.
Some vehicles do expose wheel speeds as live data, which is genuinely useful even when the codes are not readable: scan tool limits.
Sequence
- Note which corner the code names.
- Inspect the sensor tip for magnetic debris.
- Inspect the cable along its whole run, at full lock.
- Check the connector in the wheel arch.
- Check the reluctor ring for rust and damaged teeth.
- Compare all four wheel speeds in live data.
- Check tyre sizes and tread depths across the axle before condemning a sensor.
