Different wheels and tyres: what it "breaks" in the electronics
Different-sized tyres change more than the look. The speedometer starts lying, ABS calculates the wrong speed, and driver assistance systems get a shifted picture of the world.
Changing wheel size looks like a purely mechanical decision: if it fits the offset and does not rub, it will do. In reality half the systems on a modern car derive their values from wheel rotation, and a change in diameter means the world has become a different place to them.
What is calculated from wheel rotation
The list is longer than you expect:
- Vehicle speed — on most modern cars the ABS module calculates it from the wheel sensors and broadcasts it to everyone; mechanics in the speed sensor guide.
- Odometer mileage.
- Transmission shift points.
- Steering effort — it varies with speed.
- Stability control — it compares wheel speeds against each other.
- Indirect tyre pressure monitoring — where there are no in-wheel sensors, the system detects a soft tyre precisely by the rotation difference.
- Cruise control and adaptive cruise.
- Driver assistance systems — their time-to-obstacle calculations rest on speed.
So one mechanical change echoes in seven different places.
What specifically gets thrown off
Speedometer and odometer
A larger overall diameter means the wheel covers more ground per revolution — the car is going faster than the instrument shows.
Orders of magnitude: a 3 % diameter deviation produces roughly 3 % error. At 75 mph that is over 2 mph, and the odometer under-records distance by the same proportion.
A non-obvious consequence: service intervals shift, and at resale the mileage looks lower than it actually is.
Stability control and ABS
These systems compare wheel speeds against each other. If all four wheels changed equally, the comparison stays valid and there are no critical consequences.
Problems start with different sizes across axles — larger wheels fitted only at the front, for instance. The module sees a permanent rotation difference and interprets it as slip.
Worse still is different tyres on one axle. That affects not only electronics but the differential mechanically.
Indirect tyre pressure monitoring
A system that detects a soft tyre by rotation difference must be reinitialised after a wheel change. Without that it will either stay silent during a genuine deflation or produce constant false warnings.

In-wheel sensors
With a direct system, changing a set of wheels means either moving the sensors across or programming new ones. The system itself is covered in its own article.
Driver assistance systems
The subtlest and most unpleasant effect. Changing wheel diameter changes ride height, and therefore the angle at which the bumper radar and windscreen camera look at the world.
The consequence is not “the system does not work” but “the system works and is wrong”: it sees an obstacle nearer or further than it is. The verification procedure is in the ADAS calibration guide and the mandatory safety systems article.
How far you can deviate
The generally accepted reference is no more than 3 % from the factory overall diameter. Within that range speedometer error stays within tolerance and the systems work correctly.
How to calculate without a calculator: overall diameter in millimetres is roughly the rim diameter in inches × 25.4 plus twice the sidewall height. Sidewall height is width × aspect ratio ÷ 100.
Example for 205/55 R16: 16 × 25.4 = 406 mm plus 2 × (205 × 0.55) = 225 mm. Total ≈ 631 mm.
A replacement must fall within 612–650 mm.
What to check after a change
- Compare the speedometer against an independent source at constant speed. More than 5 % discrepancy is a reason to reconsider.
- Read ABS codes — C0035–C0050, and P0500 if the speed signal disappeared.
- Watch individual wheel speeds in live data on a level road. One wheel consistently lagging is a reason to check the sizes.
- Reinitialise pressure monitoring.
- Check the stability control lamp — it should be off.
- Have the alignment done — worthwhile whenever tyre width changes.
Winter sets specifically
The classic situation: a winter set on smaller rims with a taller sidewall.
That is normal practice provided the overall diameter is preserved. It is exactly why manufacturers list several permitted sizes — they are chosen so the diameters match.
What is not fine: taking “whatever was in the garage” without checking the diameter. A 5 % difference between summer and winter sets means the car starts calculating speed differently twice a year.
In short
- Speed, mileage, shift points, steering effort, and safety systems all derive from wheel rotation.
- The reference is no more than 3 % deviation in overall diameter from factory.
- Different sizes across axles confuse stability control; on one axle, the differential too.
- Indirect pressure monitoring must be reinitialised after any wheel change.
- Changing diameter changes ride height, and therefore radar and camera angle.
