ABS and traction lights on together: one sensor, three warnings
Several lamps arriving at once looks like several faults. It almost never is — they share one data source, and finding which wheel is lying takes ten minutes.
The ABS lamp, the traction control lamp and often the stability control lamp all come on within a second of each other. It looks alarming and expensive. It is usually one component.
Why they arrive together
All three systems run on the same input: four wheel speed sensors, read by the ABS module and broadcast to everyone else on the network.
- ABS compares wheel speeds to detect a locking wheel.
- Traction control compares them to detect a spinning wheel.
- Stability control compares them against steering angle and yaw to detect a slide.
Lose one wheel speed signal and all three lose the ability to work. Each disables itself and lights its lamp. Three lamps, one sensor.
Depending on the car you may also lose hill-hold, adaptive cruise control, and on some models the speedometer.
Your brakes still work
Worth saying plainly. The hydraulic braking system is mechanical and independent of all this. You have full, conventional braking.
What you have lost is the anti-lock function under hard braking and the electronic safety net in a slide. Leave more distance, brake earlier, and be careful on wet or icy surfaces. It is not an immobilising fault, but it is not something to ignore for a month either.
The four common causes
1. A wheel speed sensor or its tone ring
By far the most likely. The sensor sits at the hub in the worst environment on the car — salt, water, brake dust, stones.
Failure modes:
- Sensor failed electrically. Sets a specific code such as C0035, C0040 or C0045 — ABS wheel speed sensor diagnostics.
- Debris on the sensor tip. Metallic paste from brake wear collects on the magnet and the signal degrades.
- Damaged tone ring. The toothed ring the sensor reads can corrode, crack or lose teeth. Very common on older cars, and the giveaway is a fault that appears only above or below a certain speed.
- Wiring at the hub. The cable flexes with every suspension movement and every steering input. It breaks internally where it enters the hub.
2. Communication with the ABS module
If the module has gone silent, everything that depends on it fails at once — but so does the ability to read it. That is U0121 lost communication with the ABS module, and it is usually power, ground or a corroded connector rather than a dead module.
3. Low battery voltage
A weak battery makes modules drop off the network during cranking, and they store faults on the way. Lamps that appear at start and clear after a few minutes of driving are almost always this. Test the battery under load before anything else — alternator charging diagnostics.
4. Something that changed recently
Think about what happened just before the lamps appeared:
- New tyres or wheels? Mismatched rolling radii produce persistent speed differences — wheel and tyre size change electronics.
- A different-sized spare fitted? Same effect, and very common.
- Wheel bearing or hub replaced? Sensor disturbed, or the wrong tone ring fitted.
- Deep water or a pothole? Driving through flood water, pothole damage.
- Suspension or brake work? The sensor cable is the first thing to get pinched.
Narrowing it down in ten minutes
Wheel speeds are readable as live data on most vehicles, and comparing them is the whole diagnosis.
Drive slowly in a straight line on level ground and watch all four:

A sensor that works at 30 mph and drops out at 5 mph points at a passive sensor type or a weak signal; one that fails at speed points at a damaged tone ring.
The code will name the wheel
C-codes for wheel speed sensors identify the corner. That is a considerable head start, and it comes from a two-minute scan.
Be aware that generic OBD-II often does not reach the ABS module — this is chassis data, not emissions data, and access varies. See scan tool limits and, for why a chassis code can point back at the engine, C1201.
Steering angle sensor
If the stability lamp is on but ABS is not, look at the steering angle sensor instead. It commonly needs calibration after an alignment, a steering rack replacement or a battery disconnection — steering angle sensor calibration.
Cost expectations
- Cleaning a sensor tip: labour only.
- Wheel speed sensor: $30–150.
- Tone ring: $20–120, though on some designs it is integrated into the bearing.
- Wheel bearing with integrated ring: $100–400.
- Wiring repair: $50–200.
- ABS module: $600–2000 with coding.
The spread is why identifying the corner before authorising work matters.
After the repair
Clear codes, then drive slowly and confirm all four wheel speeds track together, and that every lamp extinguishes. Recheck after a cold start — intermittent sensor faults often reappear only when damp.
