Changan and BYD: OBD-II access on combustion and electric models
BYD sells mostly electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, which changes what OBD-II can tell you. Changan combustion models read conventionally. The difference is worth understanding first.
These two brands need separating before anything else, because their diagnostic realities differ fundamentally.
Changan sells mostly conventional combustion and turbocharged models, which read like any other modern car.
BYD sells overwhelmingly battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, and on an EV the majority of what OBD-II was designed to report simply does not exist.

Why OBD-II gives less on an electric vehicle
This is the point most people are surprised by, and it applies to every EV regardless of badge.
OBD-II is an emissions standard. Its mandated content is combustion data: misfires, fuel trims, oxygen sensors, catalyst efficiency, EVAP integrity. An electric vehicle has none of those, so there is nothing for the standard to require.
What that means practically:
- Traction battery state of health — manufacturer-specific, not generic.
- Cell voltages and temperatures — manufacturer-specific.
- Inverter and motor data — manufacturer-specific.
- Charging system diagnostics — manufacturer-specific.

What still matters enormously on a BYD
The 12 V battery
An EV still has a conventional 12 V battery, and it powers everything that wakes the car up: contactors, control modules, the systems that decide to connect the traction battery at all.
A flat 12 V battery immobilises an EV completely, regardless of a full traction battery. Owners find this genuinely surprising, and it is one of the most common EV roadside calls.
This is readable with a standard adapter, and it is the single most valuable thing generic OBD-II offers on an electric vehicle.

Battery health when buying used
On a used EV, traction battery condition is most of the value. Generic OBD-II will not give it to you, so:
- Use the vehicle’s own service or diagnostic menus where available.
- Check charging behaviour — how quickly it tapers, and what usable capacity the car reports.
- Ask for a manufacturer battery health report.

BYD plug-in hybrids
The DM-i and similar systems have a combustion engine, which means part of the conventional picture returns: misfires, fuel trims, catalyst monitoring and EVAP all exist and read normally.
The complication is that the engine runs intermittently and often at fixed operating points, so some monitors take a long time to complete. Readiness can lag considerably behind a conventional car.

Changan combustion models
These read conventionally, and the fault profile follows the architecture rather than the origin.
Turbocharged direct injection: boost leaks rather than turbo failures — turbocharger boost leak diagnostics and P0299 and P0234.
Intake valve carbon on DI engines — GDI carbon buildup.
Mixture codes from perished hoses — P0171 and P0174.
Misfires from coils and plugs — P0301 to P0304.
Dual-clutch gearboxes where fitted, with the usual fluid interval requirement — P0700 is a pointer only, and transmission shudder at low speed covers the symptom.
Start with the supported PID list
On any less-familiar vehicle, reading what the ECU advertises as supported is the most productive first step. It tells you exactly what this car will report and prevents fruitless searching.

Adapter note
Diagnostics runs over Bluetooth Classic (SPP). BLE-only adapters pair with a phone and then fail to talk to the car, because the ELM327 protocol requires a serial profile BLE does not provide.

Being honest about expectations
If you own a BYD electric vehicle and want cell-level battery data, a generic adapter will not provide it, and no app can change that — the vehicle does not expose it through the generic interface.
What it will reliably give you is the 12 V system, stored generic codes, and any combustion data on a hybrid. That is genuinely useful, and it is worth knowing the boundary rather than discovering it.
