HV battery of a hybrid (Toyota Prius, Honda Insight, Ford Fusion Hybrid) — the most expensive car part ($1500-4000 to replace). But 80% of “dead” batteries are just 1-2 weak blocks out of 20-28 reducing whole pack efficiency. OBD-II sees this precisely. Below: how to read SoH via ELM327.
What SoH (State of Health) is
SoH — percentage of remaining battery capacity vs new:
- 100% — fresh battery (first 20k mi)
- 85-95% — healthy (20-60k mi)
- 70-85% — aged but working (60-125k mi)
- < 70% — critical, replace or repair
- < 50% — may still drive, but MPG drops from 50 to 30
What OBD-II shows
Standard OBD-II (Mode 01):
- Doesn’t show SoH — that’s manufacturer PID
- Shows only overall SoC (State of Charge, %)
Mode 22 for Toyota Prius (Techstream-compatible PIDs):
- Battery block voltage — 28 blocks × ~7.2V = 200V nominal
- Battery block temperature — 4 sensors per pack
- Imbalance: highest vs lowest block delta (norm < 0.2V, warn > 0.5V)
- Internal resistance per block
- Ah calculated — real capacity (new: 6.5 Ah, critical: < 4.0 Ah)
- Cycle count — total full cycles
Classic patterns
One weak block
- OBD: block 14: 6.8V (norm 7.2V), others 7.1-7.2V
- Symptom: intermittent P0A80 (Battery Pack Deterioration), hybrid drops to “engine-only” mode
- Fix: repair individual block ($300-600 at specialized shop) — much cheaper than new pack
Cell imbalance
- OBD: imbalance 0.6V (norm < 0.2V)
- Symptom: frequent regen misses, MPG drops
- Fix: balancing at shop ($150-400) — procedure that “equalizes” blocks
Total capacity drop (SoH < 70%)
- OBD: Ah calculated = 4.2 Ah (new = 6.5)
- Symptom: hybrid can’t hold charge — after 5 min city battery drained
- Fix: refurbished pack ($1000-2000) or new OEM ($2500-4500)
Overheating
- OBD: block temperature 55°C+ (norm 25-40°C)
- Symptom: fan noise constant, hybrid in “limp mode”
- Cause: clogged battery cooler (dust from cabin via intake grille)
- Fix: cooler cleaning (~$100), cabin filter replacement
