Electric car will not start: why the cheap battery is at fault, not the expensive one
The most common electric car failure is an ordinary lead-acid battery costing a hundred dollars. Why it works harder in a car with no engine than in a petrol one, and how to keep an eye on it.
A scenario that surprises thousands of owners every year: the traction battery is at 80 % and the car will not power up at all. No lights, no screens, no response to the key.
In the overwhelming majority of cases the cause is the ordinary 12-volt battery — the same lead-acid unit petrol cars have used for a century.
Why an electric car has two batteries
The logic is obvious once you see it.
The traction battery runs at hundreds of volts. It moves the car, and connecting headlights, locks, or infotainment to it would be pointless and dangerous.
The 12-volt battery powers everything ordinary: control modules, lighting, locks, screens, sensors. All the low-voltage electrics in an electric car are identical to any other vehicle’s.
And crucially: the 12-volt battery is what switches the high-voltage system on. It powers the contactors — the relays that physically connect the traction battery. No 12 volts, no contactors, and the traction battery stays disconnected regardless of how much charge it holds.
So “no 12 V” means “dead car”, whatever the main battery’s state.
Why it goes flat more often than expected
You would think a car with no starter motor would be gentler on its battery. The reverse is true.
There is no alternator. In a petrol car the alternator charges the battery the whole time the engine runs. In an electric car charging comes from the traction battery through a converter — and only while the car is switched on or charging. Parked and switched off, it charges not at all.
A lot of electronics never sleeps. Telematics, remote access, cabin preconditioning, firmware updates — all of that runs while parked and draws from 12 volts.
Long idle periods. Electric cars often stand longer than petrol ones: charged and then not driven for days.
Cold. Lead-acid capacity falls 20–40 % in the cold, regardless of vehicle type.
The sum of those factors means a 12-volt battery in an electric car often lives less long than in a conventional one, not more.
Signs it is at its limit
Total failure is usually preceded by warnings:
- The car takes longer to wake up when you press the button or approach with the key.
- Screens come on late or restart.
- Settings reset — clock, profiles, radio.
- Remote commands from the app stop arriving.
- Odd fault messages appear about systems that are actually fine.
That last point is especially characteristic: as voltage sags, modules honestly log lost communication, and fault memory fills with a cascade of codes across systems. Not ten failures but one — mechanics in ghost and false codes.
How to keep watch
The simplest and cheapest method is voltage through the diagnostic port. It is one of the few parameters that reads normally on an electric car with an ordinary adapter; why that is so is covered in OBD on electric cars.

Check the overnight voltage once a month and you will see the trend weeks before the car refuses to wake.

What to do if the car is already dead
- Do not panic about the traction battery. It is almost certainly not involved.
- Find the connection points. On many electric cars the battery itself is hidden and dedicated jump terminals are provided under the bonnet. Their location is in the manual, and it is worth reading in advance rather than during the problem.
- Connect a charger or jump pack, strictly per the manufacturer’s procedure.
- Do not jump-start from another car “the usual way” unless the manual permits it. The jump-start procedure is covered separately.
- Read the codes after starting — and do not be alarmed by the cascade. Clear, drive, see what returns.
Separately: jump-starting another car from an electric one is generally not possible — its converter is not designed for it.
Prevention
- Do not leave the car for long periods with a low traction battery. The 12-volt charging comes from there; an empty traction battery means nothing to charge from.
- Check voltage once a month.
- Replace with the type the manufacturer specifies. Many electric cars require AGM or a specific type — an ordinary lead-acid battery in cyclic use dies quickly.
- For long storage — connect a maintenance charger.
- Know in advance where the jump points are on your model.
In short
- The 12-volt battery switches the high-voltage system on; without it the car is dead.
- There is no alternator — charging happens only with the car on or charging.
- A cascade of codes across systems is a voltage sag, not ten failures.
- Overnight voltage below 12.2 V is a failure trend visible weeks ahead.
- Read where the jump points are before you need them, not in a cold car park.
