Windows fogging on the inside: where the water is coming from
Condensation on the inside means moisture in the cabin. Some of it is you breathing; some of it is a leak that will eventually cost real money.
Warm moist air meeting cold glass condenses. Some of that is unavoidable — people breathe, and wet clothes dry out. Persistent fogging means there is more water inside the car than there should be.

Clearing it quickly, and the mistake people make
Air conditioning is a dehumidifier, and it works below freezing outside as well as in summer.
The fastest clear:
- Air conditioning on.
- Fresh air, not recirculation.
- Temperature high, directed at the windscreen.
- Fan high.
Recirculation is the mistake. It recycles the moist cabin air you are trying to remove, and it is why some cars fog worse the harder you try.
Many vehicles switch on the air conditioning automatically in windscreen mode for exactly this reason.
Where the water comes from
The occupants
Breathing, wet coats, umbrellas, snow on boots. A car with several people in wet weather fogs quickly, and that is normal.
Mitigations: shake off wet clothing before getting in, remove wet mats, and leave the car ventilated when parked where you safely can.
Wet carpets
Sustained fogging, particularly on one side, often means the carpet is wet.
Press firmly on the carpet in each footwell with a hand or a paper towel. Damp carpet is a leak, and it evaporates continuously into the cabin.
Sources:
- Blocked scuttle drains at the base of the windscreen.
- Blocked air conditioning condensate drain, which floods the passenger side: hissing from the vents.
- Failed door seals or a perished membrane inside the door.
- Blocked sunroof drains: sunroof drain blockage.
- Windscreen or rear screen seal leaking, often after a replacement.
Damp carpet and electrical faults — which is the real cost, because modules and connectors live under those carpets.
A leaking heater matrix
The one to identify quickly, because it is expensive to reach.
The signature is a greasy film on the inside of the glass that smears rather than cleaning off, plus a sweet smell and a falling coolant level.
That distinction matters: water condensation cleans off with glass cleaner. A glycol film does not.
Water in the boot
Standing water in the spare wheel well evaporates into the cabin on estates and hatchbacks where the boot is not sealed from the interior.

A blocked cabin filter
Restricts airflow, so the demist function cannot move enough air. Cheap to replace and frequently neglected: cabin filter and air quality.
Air conditioning not working
If the system cannot dehumidify, fogging is much worse. A car that suddenly fogs badly in winter may have lost its refrigerant charge.

Finding a leak
The hose test: with a helper inside the car, run water gently over one area at a time — windscreen base, each door seal, the sunroof, the rear screen — while the helper watches for ingress. Work systematically rather than soaking the whole car.
Check the scuttle under the plastic trim at the base of the windscreen. Leaves accumulate there and block the drains.
Check the sunroof drains by pouring a little water into the sunroof channel and confirming it exits under the car.
The costs of ignoring it
Beyond visibility:
- Corrosion of the floor pan from underneath the carpet.
- Electrical faults, since modules and connectors live in footwells and under seats: B0001 to B0100 airbag codes and U0151 restraints module.
- Mould and smell, which is difficult to remove once established.
Where to start
- Use air conditioning with fresh air to clear it.
- Press the carpets in all footwells and the boot.
- Check for a greasy film on the glass.
- Check the coolant level.
- Clear the scuttle and sunroof drains.
- Change the cabin filter.
- Hose test systematically if the source is not obvious.
