Hissing from the vents: blend door, refrigerant or a blocked drain

Some hissing from the dashboard is normal air conditioning behaviour. Some is a leak. The timing and the accompanying smell separate them.

The blend door actuator

The most common source of an abnormal noise from the dashboard.

Small electric motors move flaps that direct air and mix hot and cold. They contain plastic gears, and those gears strip.

The signature: a repeated clicking, ticking or knocking from behind the dashboard, often when the ignition is first switched on or when the temperature setting is changed. A stripped gear means the motor turns and the flap does not.

Accompanying symptom: air that will not change temperature, or comes from the wrong vents.

Heater warm on one side only and heater not warm diagnosis.

The refrigerant hiss that means a leak

Continuous hissing when the air conditioning runs, particularly with poor cooling, can mean a low refrigerant charge.

Air conditioning systems are sealed and do not consume refrigerant. A low charge means a leak, and simply recharging means paying again next year.

Symptoms alongside: cooling that has degraded gradually, and a compressor cycling on and off rapidly.

Water where it should not be

A gurgling or sloshing rather than a hiss, and it points at drainage.

The evaporator condenses water out of the air, and that water drains through a tube to the outside. A blocked drain means the condensate collects in the housing.

Consequences:

  • Gurgling sounds, particularly when cornering or braking.
  • A musty smell as the standing water grows bacteria: air conditioning bad smell diagnosis.
  • Eventually, water overflowing into the passenger footwell.

A wet passenger footwell with no other explanation is very often a blocked air conditioning drain: damp carpet and electrical faults and water leak into cabin.

The drain tube usually exits under the car near the bulkhead and can often be cleared from below.

The cabin filter

A blocked filter increases air velocity through the remaining path, which produces noise and reduces airflow.

It is also the cheapest maintenance item in the system, and one of the most neglected: cabin filter and air quality.

Debris in the system

Leaves and other material enter through the scuttle intake and reach the blower.

A rustling or ticking that changes with fan speed is usually something loose in the blower housing.

That also connects to the drainage question, because a scuttle full of leaves blocks the drains that keep water out of the cabin.

Where to start

  1. Note when it happens — with the air conditioning on, when changing settings, or all the time.
  2. Note whether it changes with fan speed — that means airflow rather than refrigerant.
  3. Check the passenger footwell for damp.
  4. Check whether cooling has degraded alongside the noise.
  5. Change the cabin filter if its history is unknown.
  6. Clear the scuttle of leaves and check the drains.
