Washer pump silent: fuse, pump or a frozen line
A trivial system until you need it on a salted motorway. The causes are cheap and the checks take minutes.
The washer system is the least sophisticated thing on a modern car: a reservoir, a pump, some tubing and two jets.
It is also the difference between seeing and not seeing on a wet salted motorway, which is why an inspection failure for a non-working washer is entirely reasonable.

Does the pump make a noise?
The first question, and it splits the diagnosis in half.
Have someone operate the washer while you listen at the reservoir.

No noise: electrical
The fluid level
Obvious, and it accounts for more of these than anything else. Some vehicles inhibit the pump when the level sensor reads empty, to protect it from running dry.
The fuse
Test with a meter rather than by eye. Often shared with the wipers, so check whether they still work.

The connector at the pump
Located low, at the reservoir, in the wheel arch area on many vehicles. Road spray and salt reach it, and corrosion is common.
The pump
They fail, particularly after being run dry or after freezing.
The stalk switch
Less common, but it is a switch that gets used constantly.
Noise but no water: mechanical
Frozen
The most common winter cause. Water freezes, and screenwash diluted too far freezes at a temperature that surprises people.
Frozen fluid can crack the reservoir or split the tubing, which turns a seasonal inconvenience into a repair.
Use screenwash at the correct concentration for the temperature, and do not dilute it beyond the stated ratio.

Blocked jets
Wax, dirt or polish residue. Clear carefully with a fine pin — and note that many modern jets are fan-type rather than single-hole, where forcing a pin can damage the pattern.
A split or disconnected hose
The tubing runs under the bonnet lining and along the scuttle, and it gets knocked off during other work.
If washer fluid disappears with no visible spray, look for a wet area under the bonnet.
A blocked reservoir filter
Small strainer on the pump inlet, which collects debris and, on vehicles that have had wrong fluid added, sludge.
The rear washer
Same system, longer tubing. The line runs the length of the vehicle and through the tailgate hinge area, which is where it splits.

What not to put in the reservoir
Plain water. It freezes, it grows algae, and it does nothing to dissolve traffic film.
Household detergent. It foams excessively, damages paint and rubber over time, and can attack the pump seals.
Screenwash diluted further than stated. The concentration is a freezing point, not a suggestion.
Anything with an unknown composition. The system feeds fluid onto paint, rubber and glass, and some fluids attack all three.
The headlight washers
Vehicles with them use the same reservoir but usually a separate, higher-capacity pump. A failure there does not affect the windscreen and vice versa.
They also consume fluid quickly, which is worth knowing when the reservoir empties faster than expected.
Sequence
- Check the fluid level.
- Listen at the reservoir while someone operates the washer.
- If silent: check the fuse, then the connector at the pump.
- If running dry: check for freezing, then blocked jets, then a split hose.
- Check for a wet area under the bonnet if fluid disappears.
- Use correct-concentration screenwash to prevent the winter version of this.
