Honda Civic and Accord: common OBD faults by generation
Honda engines are famously durable, so the recurring faults cluster around the systems bolted to them — VTEC oil pressure, catalyst efficiency and, on turbo models, oil dilution.
Honda’s reputation for engine durability is largely deserved, which shifts the fault list towards the systems around the engine rather than the engine itself.

VTEC and oil pressure
VTEC switches cam profiles hydraulically, which makes it entirely dependent on oil pressure and oil condition.
The recurring fault is the VTEC solenoid or its pressure switch, and the usual root cause is sludge from extended oil change intervals or the wrong grade. The screen behind the solenoid blocks, pressure never reaches the switch, and a code sets.
Symptoms: no high-cam engagement, so the engine feels flat above the switchover point and fuel consumption rises.

Cleaning the screen and replacing the solenoid is usually inexpensive. Ignoring it while continuing extended oil intervals is how it becomes expensive.
Catalyst codes
P0420 is among the most reported Honda codes, and among the most misdiagnosed.
Before agreeing to a catalyst, rule out:
- An exhaust leak near the downstream sensor, which draws in air and produces the code with a healthy catalyst.
- An ageing upstream sensor reading slowly — P0133 slow oxygen sensor response.
- A genuine mixture problem upstream — P0171 and P0174.
The test: put both oxygen sensors on one graph. A downstream trace that copies the upstream one means catalyst. A downstream trace stuck at one end means leak or contamination.
1.5 turbo: oil dilution
The 1.5 VTEC Turbo used in later Civics and Accords had a documented fuel-dilution issue, most pronounced in cold climates and short-trip use.
Direct-injected fuel washes past the rings into the sump, and the oil level rises on the dipstick. Diluted oil lubricates poorly, and on an engine that depends on oil pressure for VTEC that matters twice over.
If the level is above maximum, change the oil. Do not top up, and do not wait for the service interval. See oil light flickering at idle for what low effective pressure looks like.

Direct injection carbon
The turbo engines are direct injection, so intake valve deposits accumulate. Misfires that survive new coils and plugs point here: GDI carbon buildup and P0301 to P0304.
CVT transmissions
Many Civics and Accords use a continuously variable transmission, and it has one absolute requirement: the correct fluid, changed on a real interval.
CVT fluid is not interchangeable with conventional ATF. Using the wrong fluid causes shudder and slip in a mechanically sound transmission, and it is a genuinely common outcome after a service at a general workshop.

Air conditioning
Honda compressors are a recurring complaint at higher mileage, and a failing compressor can send debris through the whole system. Air conditioning OBD diagnostics.
Electrical
Generally undramatic, with the universal caveat: a weak battery produces faults across several systems that look unrelated. Test under load before diagnosing anything.

Timing: belt or chain
Older Accord V6 engines use a timing belt with a replacement interval that is not optional — several are interference designs. Most four-cylinder Civics use chains.
Establish which yours has, and for a belt engine treat a missing replacement record as a repair cost, not a maybe.

Buying used
- Oil level on 1.5 turbo models. Above maximum means dilution.
- Service history for oil, since VTEC depends on it.
- CVT fluid history and specification.
- Timing belt record on belt-driven engines.
