Oil change intervals: why the schedule and reality disagree
The schedule was not written for your route. What "severe conditions" means, why it applies to most drivers, and how to work out an honest interval.
The figure in the handbook is not a universal constant but the result of a calculation for a particular regime. The problem is that the regime rarely matches how you actually drive.
What “severe conditions” means
Every handbook contains a second, shorter interval. The conditions look exotic until you read them carefully:
- Frequent short journeys — that is, the daily urban commute.
- Extended idling — traffic.
- Low temperatures — winter.
- Dusty roads.
- Towing or heavy loads.
- Mountain roads.
Reread that list and the main point becomes visible: most drivers operate in “severe conditions”, while the headline interval was written for steady motorway running.

Why the marketing interval is longer
There is no conspiracy here, only economics.
A long interval means a lower stated cost of ownership in comparison tables and fewer workshop visits. It is calculated for the warranty period, not for the whole life of the engine.
So “per the schedule” and “optimal for the engine” are not synonyms, and the difference shows up after the warranty ends.
What actually degrades oil
Not mileage but engine hours and temperature.
- Traffic — the engine runs while the odometer stands still.
- Fuel dilution on cold journeys.
- Condensate on short trips.
- Overheating oxidises oil irreversibly.
- A turbocharger — a hot component that heats the oil harder.
So a car covering 6,000 urban miles a year degrades its oil more than one covering 12,000 motorway miles.
A practical approach
- Find the factory interval — and the second one, for severe conditions.
- Assess your own regime honestly against the list above.
- Short urban journeys — use the shortened interval.
- The calendar counts too: oil ages while parked. Once a year even at low mileage.
- Check the level monthly, not only before a service.
About oil life monitors
On some cars the module calculates remaining oil life from revolutions, temperature, and duty cycle.
That beats a fixed mileage, because it accounts for real use. With two caveats:
- The algorithm does not know which oil was filled or whether something else was topped in.
- It assumes factory expectations about fuel quality.
What diagnostics does with it: the counter value and the reset procedure are available through a scanner — and that is exactly how it must be reset after a change, otherwise the module keeps counting from the old oil.
What else to watch in the data
Coolant temperature at the end of a journey — does the engine reach operating temperature.
Engine hours, where available — a more accurate measure than miles.
Start counts — many starts at low mileage means a regime where the interval should be shortened.
