Honda CR-V and SUVs OBD-II Diagnostics: K20/K24 i-VTEC, 1.5T, i-MMD Hybrid

Honda CR-V is Honda’s most popular crossover. CR-V III (RE1-RE5, 2006–2011) with K24Z engines, CR-V IV (RM1-RM4, 2011–2016), and CR-V V (RW/RV, 2017+) with 1.5T and i-MMD hybrid — each generation has characteristic OBD-II faults.
K20/K24 i-VTEC (CR-V III, Element, Accord): Naturally Aspirated Inline-4
P2646 — VTEC System: Insufficient Oil Pressure
Most common code on Honda K-series:
P2646 = Rocker Arm Oil Pressure Switch Circuit Low Voltage
Cause: Honda’s VTEC system depends on oil pressure to switch between low and high cams. Triggered by:
- Low oil level (even 300–500 ml below MAX)
- Poor quality oil (thinned after 10,000 km)
- Blocked mesh filter in VTEC solenoid housing
Live Data:
VTEC Oil Pressure Switch: ON (normal above 1,500 RPM and ≥ 2.0 bar oil pressure)Engine Oil Pressure: < 2.0 bar at 2,000 RPM → root cause of P2646
Solution:
- Check oil level (not “slightly below”, must be at MAX)
- Oil + filter change (Honda recommends 0W-20 or 5W-20)
- Clean VTEC solenoid mesh filter or replace solenoid
P0341 — Camshaft Position Sensor Signal
K24Z after 150,000 km without timing chain service:
CMP Sensor Signal Quality: intermittent- Timing chain rattling on cold start
1.5T L15B7 (CR-V V, Civic X): Turbocharged GDI
Honda’s 1.5T L15B7 — GDI with lower carbon risk due to port design, but has another known issue: oil dilution with petrol in cold climates.
P2187 — Lean Mixture from Carbon
L15B7 and GDI carbon (less pronounced than EA888):
STFT B1> +7% at idle → possible carbon or PCV issue- Typically appears after 80,000–100,000 km
Oil Dilution Problem (No OBD Code, But Critical)
Not an OBD code, but a critical L15B7 issue:
- In cold conditions (< 10°C) the engine enriches mixture during warm-up
- Some petrol condenses on cylinder walls and enters the oil
- Short trips don’t allow oil to evaporate the petrol

P0A80 — HV Battery Deterioration
HV Battery SOC: normal maintained between 30–80%Cell Voltage Deviation: > 30 mV between cells → P0A80
P0C38 — Traction Motor/Generator Fault
- P0C38 on Honda = primary traction motor fault
Motor Temperature: > 140°C → power limitation active

P0868 — CVT Hydraulic Pressure Below Threshold
- CVT oil pump wear after 120,000 km
CVT Fluid Pressure: < 7 bar → pump or valve body fault- Change Honda CVT Fluid every 30,000 km (specific fluid, not generic ATF!)
P1778 — CVT Step Motor: Mismatch
- Step motor controls CVT ratio
- P1778 when step motor fails → CVT locks to one ratio
