A cam phaser runs on engine oil under pressure, and its control valve has a fine mesh filter.

That is the most common visible consequence of economising on oil, and it surfaces around 60,000–90,000 miles.

Can you use thicker oil

A widespread idea: “the engine is old, I use 10W-40 instead of 5W-30, it will burn less”.

What works: thicker oil genuinely can reduce consumption slightly and quieten lifter noise on a worn engine.

What does not:

  • Hydraulic systems are designed for a specific viscosity. Thicker oil passes less readily through the cam phaser’s fine passages — and you acquire a P0011 for nothing.
  • On a cold start thick oil takes longer to reach the top of the head. That works directly against a worn engine.
  • Fuel consumption rises.

Conclusion: on an engine with cam phasers and a particulate filter, viscosity experiments cost more than they gain.

Severe conditions that shorten the interval:

  • Short urban trips — the oil never warms, and condensation and fuel in it never evaporate.
  • Extended idling.
  • Towing and full loading.
  • Dusty roads.

  1. Find the approval in the manual — that is the primary source, not shop advice.
  2. Verify the approval appears on the label. “Meets the requirements of” is not the same as an official approval.

  4. Shorten the interval if conditions are severe.
  5. Check the level every 600 miles, not once per change — especially on engines prone to consumption.
